Hiking trails between river, forest and karst

The PR 1 AVZ – Por trilhos de Al-Baizir runs through oak forests and olive groves, passing areas of aromatic plants and places where wild orchids grow. The circular route is 9.3 kilometres long; the stated duration is about 2 hours and 40 minutes.

The PR 5 AVZ – Percurso da Ribeira do Tordo offers a different focus: it follows the Ribeira do Tordo, passes the ruins of watermills and reaches the Olho do Tordo spring. The PR 7 AVZ – Rota Dona Maria runs along the right bank of the Ribeira de Foz de Alge to the area around the Ribeira de Foz de Alge river beach. These route descriptions highlight waterways and their surroundings, while the PR 1 links its route with forests, olive groves and plant diversity.

Fórnea do Bofinho also showcases a distinctive karst landscape: the hollow is typical of karst areas and contains a well-maintained olive grove. Serra de Alvaiázere is the highest point of the Sicó Massif. Here, a limestone landscape meets archaeological history: the Serra is home to a Bronze Age settlement.

Ramalhal is both the starting point and endpoint of the circular PR 6 AVZ – Percurso Pedestre do Ramalhal. When planning, take the current vegetation notice for the route into account. Another option for a longer connection is the Rota Carmelita: it passes through Alvaiázere and forms part of a 111-kilometre route from Carmelo de Santa Teresa in Coimbra to the Santuário de Fátima. The PR 8 AVZ – Rota dos Cântaros e das Rodilhas crosses the Caminho de Santiago and runs through the Sicó-Alvaiázere Site of Community Importance.

Megaliths, archaeology and museum

In the Ramalhal area, the megalithic complex includes monuments that are about 5,000 years old. The GR 35 AVZ – Grande Rota de Alvaiázere follows an old Roman road to the complex. If you are interested in the long history of the landscape, you can find further points of interest at the Roman villa in the Rominha area and at the Capela de Nossa Senhora dos Covões, which dates from the 18th century.

At the Museu Municipal de Alvaiázere, two exhibitions bring different historical topics to life. “Tempo, Espaço e Memória” focuses on traditional occupations that shaped Alvaiázere municipality up to the mid-20th century. “Conduzidos pelo Tempo” covers the municipality’s archaeology and the settlement of the area from the Palaeolithic to the Middle Ages. The museum is open Monday to Saturday: in winter, Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 17:00; in summer, from 10:00 to 18:00. On Saturdays, it is open from 11:00 to 17:00 in both seasons. It is closed on Sundays and public holidays. Check opening hours before your visit.

Landscape and regional cuisine

Well-watered floodplains and towering limestone formations shape Alvaiázere. Its diverse landscape includes pines, Portuguese oaks, holm oaks, cork oaks, centuries-old olive trees and wild orchids. Parque Botânico da Mata do Carrascal is a protected area covering 14.73 hectares. Alvaiázere’s place within Terras de Sicó also offers a regional perspective: this region is shaped by its geological, archaeological, architectural and ethnographic heritage.

Cuisine offers another way to experience the region. Chícharos are used to make dishes such as purée and side dishes served with meat, cured meats and fish, especially fried sardines and cod. For Farinheira de Chícharo, hot water and chícharo flour are added after three days of curing; the sausage is then stuffed and smoked.

Access to the Valle D’Encanto Disc Golf Park is restricted because there are animals on the course. You must contact the park in advance to arrange a time to visit or play. If you are looking for a holiday rental, you can base your choice on the experiences that matter to you during your stay: for example, hiking trails and scenery, archaeological sites, or the museum and regional cuisine.
