A Village with Its Own Traditions

The Museu Etnográfico de Sabugueiro presents the rural life of the local population. Particular emphasis is placed on pastoral farming and agricultural sowing. Another architectural landmark is the Igreja Paroquial de Sabugueiro, also known as the Igreja de São João Baptista. It is a church made of granite. The Fonte do Ferreiro is made entirely of granite and has a lower granite basin beneath the outlet.

The local food culture also reflects Sabugueiro’s distinctive character. Rye and corn bread are traditionally baked at the Forno Comunitário de Sabugueiro. Pão de Centeio from Sabugueiro is made with wheat and rye flour, salt and baker’s yeast; the proportion of rye in the flour must be more than 60 percent. Culinary traditions also include cheese, honey and cured meats, as well as goat, lamb and chicken, traditionally roasted in black earthenware pots. The village’s clothing traditions include coats, capotes, blankets and other warm garments made from Burel.
