Seia: Mountains, Trails and Culture in the Serra da Estrela

Seia combines the landscape of the Serra da Estrela with varied trails, museums and regional specialities. The municipality lies on the western slope of the Serra da Estrela massif, covers 26 percent of the Parque Natural da Serra da Estrela and extends as far as the Torre, the highest point of the massif. Mountains, valleys, high plateaus and lowlands shape an area where active days and cultural discoveries can be combined with ease.

Landscape and trails around Seia

For planning a trip with different interests, the surrounding area offers several clearly distinct experiences. In the Seia area, the Caminhos de Montanha comprise approximately 100 kilometres of hiking trails and 150 kilometres of cycling routes with varying elevation profiles. Those who prefer a clearly defined route can complete the 15.6-kilometre Rota do Rio Seia on foot or by bicycle. It begins in the centre of Seia, passes through the villages of Santiago, Folgosa do Salvador, Santa Comba, Sameice and Pereiro, which have historical links to the river, and ends in Vila Verde.

The highlands also have their own distinctive appeal. The Caminhos dos Conchos circular route begins and ends at Lagoa Comprida, next to the sales kiosk. Lagoa Comprida is the largest lake in the Serra da Estrela high massif and its most important water reservoir. The GR22 passes through mountain villages and then continues into the municipality of Arganil, where the village of Piódão is located. When choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home, you can therefore consider whether hiking, cycling, high-mountain landscapes or a combination of nature and cultural experiences should be the focus of your trip.

Museums, history and regional identity

CISE brings the fauna, flora and geology of the Serra da Estrela to life through an interactive permanent exhibition and virtual reality. Its offerings also include hiking routes, snow walks and birdwatching for those interested in wildlife. The Museu do Brinquedo de Seia displays around 10,000 toys from Portugal and around the world. Another unusual subject is presented by the Museu do Pão, with a multisensory experience dedicated to Portugal’s bread heritage.

History is also visible in the buildings and collections. The Centro Interpretativo de Seia is located in the extension of the Solar dos Botelhos, a 16th-century Manueline building. The Museu Natural da Eletricidade is housed in the former Central da Senhora do Desterro, considered one of Portugal’s oldest hydroelectric power stations. As part of its educational offerings, the museum provides guided tours and routes through the Mata do Desterro. The Centro Interpretativo da Ovelha Serra da Estrela offers a sensory interpretation of wool, milk, pastureland and the work of shepherds across three floors.

Water, viewpoints and special excursions

The riverside and aquatic landscapes offer a pleasant change from mountain trails. From Praia Fluvial da Lapa dos Dinheiros, a footpath leads to Buraco da Moura and to a viewpoint overlooking the Caniça waterfalls. Praia Fluvial da Lapa dos Dinheiros offers clear water for swimming and has been awarded accessible beach status. Praia Fluvial de Loriga lies in a glacial valley formed by the glacier that shaped the Vale de Loriga.

Culinary interests can also be incorporated into your trip planning. Queijo Serra da Estrela and Requeijão de Seia are among the region’s mountain specialities. Bolo Negro de Loriga is listed as one of the mountain specialities in the Seia area. A visit to Lacticínios Correia & Barreiras in Santa Eulália can include a tasting of the cheeses produced at the factory. Travellers arriving by car mainly reach Seia via National Roads 17 and 231, which provide connections to the A25, A24 and IP3.
