Lagos between Coast, History and Nature

Lagos combines coastal landscapes, historic buildings and a wide range of discoveries. Families can switch between days at the beach, nature-focused paths, science and Portuguese history. When choosing a holiday apartment or holiday house, it is particularly useful to consider which of these experiences should define your stay.

History and Culture in Lagos

The Castelo dos Governadores, also known as Castelo de Lagos, was built in the second half of the 15th century. The Rota da Escravatura, also known as Mercado de Escravos, conveys the connection between Lagos and the slave trade that existed there in the 15th century. At the Dr. José Formosinho Museum, you will find collections on archaeology, sacred art, the history of Lagos, ethnography of the Algarve, painting, numismatics, mineralogy and overseas ethnography.

The fortresses also add historical depth to the trip. The Forte Ponta da Bandeira is an example of 17th-century Renaissance-style military architecture in the Algarve and serves as a museum site integrated into the Museu de Lagos. The Forte da Meia Praia belongs to a network of coastal fortifications east and west of the city of Lagos. It is a building of Manueline-influenced architecture that meets the new requirements of artillery. The network was built to protect against the constant attacks of pirates and corsairs.

For further cultural impressions, there are the Igreja de Santo António and the Igreja de São Sebastião. The Igreja de Santo António features Baroque gilded woodcarvings as well as blue-and-white tile panels from the 18th century. It was built in 1707 and rebuilt in 1769. The Igreja de São Sebastião was built between the 14th and 16th centuries; a small ossuary chapel is attached to it.

Coast, Beach and Paths

The boardwalks at Ponta da Piedade run from Canavial to Praia do Pinhão. This allows you to incorporate a coastal experience deliberately into your daily planning, while reserving other days for swimming or nature. Praia da Luz is accessible to people with reduced mobility and has beach facilities as well as a lifeguard service.

A beach follows the curve of a bay for more than four kilometres to the Rio de Alvor. A particularly beautiful strip of dunes separates it from the gently sloping surrounding countryside. In addition, a biodiversity station includes short signposted hiking trails of particular value for the landscape, fauna and flora.

Arrival and routes to the beaches can also be taken into account: Lagos railway station is located behind the Marina de Lagos; a sandy path leads from there to Meia Praia, 400 metres away. Several municipal bus routes connect various points in the city of Lagos with the beaches.

Active and Shared Discoveries

The Mata Nacional de Barão de São João has an obstacle fitness course as well as six hiking and mountain-biking routes. The Centro Cyclin' Portugal in the Algarve comprises nine signposted thematic routes with different levels of difficulty as well as a self-service workshop. When planning your trip, you can therefore distinguish between walks, hikes and cycling tours according to the level of challenge you want.

For curious travellers, the Centro Ciência Viva de Lagos offers the permanent exhibition “Do Astrolábio ao GPS”, which connects discoveries of the past and present. There are also educational programmes such as “Ciência em Família”, “Ciência à Conversa” and “Clube de Ciência”. These offerings provide another possible focus for a trip with children, without requiring every day to be organised in the same way.

Local Tradition and Further Areas to Consider

The Feira Concurso Arte Doce, organised by the municipality of Lagos, promotes traditional Portuguese confectionery. Another distinctive local tradition is Banho 29. It is associated with the old folk belief that a night-time swim in the sea is equivalent to 29 baths and keeps demons away.

For further orientation, you can also find Barao De Sao Joao, Bensafrim, Lagos, Luz and Odiáxere. When searching for your holiday apartment or holiday house, consider whether you primarily want to focus on culture, the coast, nature trails or varied family experiences.
