Veiros: Castle, Churches and Historic Traces
Accommodation in Veiros
Veiros invites you to explore architectural history on several scales: from the keep of the castle to historic churches, a mausoleum and a Renaissance pillory. The themes range from architectural forms and historical context to a landmark in the landscape. If you are interested in culture and history while on holiday, you will find several different points of interest here.
Castle, Tower and Landscape
Construction of the keep of Castelo de Veiros began in 1308. The castle is believed to have had four gates; one of them was located where the Torre do Relógio stands today, which formerly belonged to the portas do Sol. The date marks the start of construction of this tower; by contrast, the number of gates remains an assumption. The castle lies above the Albufeira de Ana Loura, adding a landscape dimension to the historical questions about its architecture.
Churches with Different Historical Contexts
The Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Mileu is considered one of the oldest churches in the former area of Veiros. Outside is a churchyard with benches for pilgrims, a specific detail of the church’s surroundings. The present-day Igreja do Senhor dos Passos dates from the 18th century and may have replaced an original church from the 16th century. The two churches thus offer different historical points of reference: Mileu is notable for its place in the former area, while Senhor dos Passos is associated with the construction period of the present building and its possible predecessor.
The dates also tell different stories: 1308 marks the start of construction of the keep, while the 18th century dates the present-day Igreja do Senhor dos Passos. The possible replacement of a church from the 16th century adds another historical period. When looking at the architecture, the distinction between the start of construction, the building period and a possible predecessor relationship is particularly interesting.
Mausoleum and Renaissance Pillory
Veiros can also be explored through individual monuments beyond its churches. The mausoleum of Joaquim da Costa Zagalo is located in the cemetery associated with the Misericórdia church. This memorial to a named individual gives local history a personal dimension. A pillory, a Renaissance work made of white marble from Estremoz, stands in front of the former Paços do Concelho building. Its period, material and location are specific features. In contrast to the castle and church architecture, the monument offers a municipal and art-historical perspective.
