Lagos da Beira: History in Stone and Architecture
Accommodation in Lagos da Beira
Lagos da Beira reveals its cultural history on different scales: in the parish church and 19th-century houses, in rock-cut tombs, and in a cultural centre housed in a poet’s former home. Architecture, literature and archaeology offer different themes to explore as you plan your trip.
Churches, Houses and Public Buildings
The parish church of Lagos da Beira is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist and was remodelled in the 19th century. The Casa da Família Amaral Cabral also dates from that century. Its restorations and extensions respected the original design. The two buildings have distinct histories: the church’s remodelling is documented, while the focus for the residence is how its original design was preserved.
Smaller and functional buildings also contribute to the area’s cultural character. The Fonte de São João is a public fountain of cultural interest. The Forno do Eirô is an oven building that is also considered to be of cultural interest and is classified as production and industrial architecture. Thus, religious and domestic architecture stand alongside a fountain and a building associated with production.
Rock-Cut Tombs and Archaeological Traces
The Sepulturas do Bôco is an archaeological site with anthropomorphic tombs. Four of the rock-cut tombs are in Lagos da Beira; they are carved into granite outcrops and probably date from the 9th or 10th century. The term “anthropomorphic” describes their human form. Taken together, their designation, material and tentative dating provide specific clues for interpreting the tombs as archaeological evidence.
There is also a protohistoric rock sanctuary at Lugar do Boco. The inscriptions of the Order of the Hospitallers at the same site are attributed to the mid-18th century. Different historical periods therefore meet at this location: a sanctuary from protohistoric times and inscriptions dated to the mid-18th century. The Capela de São Roque in Lagos da Beira was designed by Luigi Manini, adding another specific architectural theme to the area’s religious buildings.
Literary Heritage and Former Uses
The Biblioteca Museu Tarquínio Hall is a cultural centre in Lagos da Beira, housed in the poet’s former residence. Tarquínio da Fonseca Hall bequeathed his literary heritage to his hometown of Lagos da Beira; today, this heritage forms the collection of the Biblioteca-Museu Tarquínio da Fonseca Hall. Here, a former residence, the history of a poet and a cultural centre come together.
A house in Lagos da Beira bearing Portugal’s coat of arms formerly served as a courthouse and prison. Its former use differs considerably from that of the poet’s residence and adds another, institutional dimension to the area’s history.
Heritage Across the Wider Parish Area
The União das Freguesias de Lagos da Beira e Lajeosa is considered an area with a strong rural character, living traditions and striking natural landscapes. In Póvoa das Quartas, within this União, the Pousada de Santa Bárbara is classified as a Monumento de Interesse Público. This location places the monument within the wider parish area; it is a distinct feature alongside the architectural and cultural traces in Lagos da Beira.
