Sertã combines remarkable buildings, the riverside landscape of the Ribeira Grande and regional cuisine with a distinctive character. Anyone planning a trip to Sertã can combine cultural discoveries, an active day by the water and culinary impressions. When looking for a suitable holiday apartment, it is worth first considering whether the main focus should be on the town centre, the riverbank, hiking or historical sights.

Culture and History in Sertã

One of the most prominent structures is the Ponte Filipina da Sertã, also known as Ponte da Carvalha. It was built during the Philippine Dynasty at the beginning of the 17th century. The Capela de São Sebastião, built in the 18th century, is also located on the Alameda da Carvalha. The Alameda itself is a riverside area on the right bank of the Ribeira Grande, which is also known as the Ribeira da Sertã.

The Igreja Matriz de São Pedro features several details of art-historical interest. It was rebuilt at the beginning of the 15th century, has three naves and two side altars with gilded wooden altarpieces. Inside, there are polychrome azulejo panels, choir stalls from the collegiate church, as well as paintings depicting the martyrdom of Saint Peter and Saint Peter as patriarch. This means that a visit can be combined not only with a walk through the town, but also with a specific interest in sacred architecture and ecclesiastical art.

The town hall, the Paços do Concelho da Sertã, presents a different picture. The building was constructed in 1934 in the Art Deco style, based on a design by the architect Cassiano Branco. The Pelourinho da Sertã is a neo-style monument. It was rebuilt in 1937 using elements from the Manueline pillory erected around 1521. The Capela de São João Baptista is said to have been built in the 13th century within the castle grounds on the initiative of the Order of the Hospital.

Water, Riverbanks and a Longer Hike

For a stay focused on water and relaxation, the Praia Fluvial da Ribeira Grande provides a clear point of reference. It is located next to the municipal swimming pool and an extensive picnic park in the heart of the Vila de Sertã. The Piscina Municipal da Sertã is situated on Rua da Piscina next to the river bathing area and allows visitors to take part in water sports activities.

For hikers, the linear PR7 Rota da Celinda is a separate option. The trail is 21.5 kilometres long, classified as moderate and runs from Praia Fluvial do Troviscal to Sertã’s riverside recreation area. It passes through the areas of the parishes of Sertã and Troviscal, along the riverside landscape of the Ribeira da Sertã and through typical rural landscapes. Its length and classification should be taken into account when planning your day. This allows you to decide before choosing your holiday apartment whether a longer hike or a stay by the water should be the main focus.

Regional Cuisine and Fixed Festival Dates

Maranho is part of Sertã’s culinary tradition and is a centuries-old speciality of the municipality. It can be sampled in the municipality’s restaurants and has carried the geographical indication seal, abbreviated as GI, since 2022. The dish therefore provides a specific reason to consider regional cuisine alongside sights and landscapes when planning your trip.

The São João festival on 24 June and the São Pedro festival on 29 June bring the streets of the Vila de Sertã to life with bonfires. If you plan your stay around these dates, you will experience the town differently than on a trip focused mainly on hiking, riverside landscapes or architecture. These dates can therefore be an important consideration when choosing your travel period.
