Arrochela combines a rural landscape with the trails and viewpoints around the Albufeira do Cabril. A stream of the same name runs through the village, while fertile agricultural fields shape its character.

Hiking at Cabril: a short riverside section and long stages

The landscape becomes particularly tangible on the GR33 stage “Sob o Signo do Cabril: Área de Descanso da Arrochela > Sra. da Confiança”. It starts at the Área de Descanso da Arrochela, ends at Nossa Senhora da Confiança and runs for about 1.5 kilometres along the shore of the Albufeira do Cabril. This allows you to include a clearly defined section in your day’s planning without confusing it with the length of the entire GR33 section.

The fifth section of the Grande Rota do Zêzere is also called “Sob o Signo do Cabril” and is 62 kilometres long. It connects Cambas in the municipality of Oleiros with Pedrógão Pequeno in the municipality of Sertã. The section comprises nine stages on foot, one additional variant, one mountain-bike stage and two canoe stages. This allows you to distinguish between different means of transport when planning your trip, rather than viewing Arrochela solely as a destination for a single hike.

Another GR33 stage connects Madeirã with the Área de Descanso de Arrochela. After Madeirã, it once again follows forest paths towards the river. The “Sob o Signo do Cabril” section also passes the Área de Descanso da Arrochela and Sra. da Confiança. Those travelling with different interests can therefore check specifically whether a short riverside section, a longer hiking route or a combination of forest and river landscape best suits their own travel plans.

Viewpoints and Historic Traces

A notable viewpoint is the Miradouro de Nossa Senhora da Confiança. From there, you can survey an extensive part of the Albufeira do Cabril. The Miradouro is located on Monte de N.ª Sr.ª da Confiança in the Aldeia do Xisto de Pedrógão Pequeno. The viewpoint complements the walking experiences with a fixed location where the Cabril landscape becomes especially clear as a central theme of the trip.

The area’s cultural history is also part of the picture. The Ponte Filipina de Pedrógão Pequeno was built between 1607 and 1610. The Festa de Nossa Senhora da Confiança lasts three days and takes place in the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Confiança. This is a small, medieval-style temple built over the remains of a pre-Lusitanian Castro. Those wishing to include historic sites in their trip can connect architectural history, religious tradition and landscape here.

Arrochela as a Starting Point for Planning Your Trip

When searching for a holiday apartment in Arrochela, you can first decide on your preferred focus: Should the trip mainly revolve around forest paths and riverside sections, or would you also like to include viewpoints and historic destinations? Then compare the exact location of your accommodation with the planned route section.

Those wishing to compare other destinations at the same hierarchical level can also include Nesperal and Cernache Do Bonjardim in their further research. Arrochela itself remains an interesting choice for travellers who want to combine the Cabril landscape, viewpoints and cultural-historical impressions.
