Vila Verde: Landscape, Trails and Regional Culture

Vila Verde combines river valleys, mountain landscapes, traditional crafts and regional cuisine into a destination offering many different discoveries. The lowlands encompass the valleys of the Cávado and Homem rivers, their tributaries and the Neiva Valley. These areas were gradually regulated for cultivation. The Trilho do Fojo do Lobo e Nascente do Vade measures 13,095 metres and runs through Lameiras, Bemposta, Ameixoeira, Gondomar, Bezeguimbra and Póvoa Dura. The Trilho de Mixões da Serra – Valdreu is 13,035 metres long and passes through Mixões, Casal (Uveiras), Bezeguimbra and Posto Maior.

Together, the three trails total more than 38 kilometres. Their facilities include picnic areas, viewpoints, seating, trail signs, as well as informative and interpretive panels. The different trail lengths help you plan your day, without an automatically inferred walking time or difficulty level. The walking route À volta do Museu do Linho is also associated with the Museu do Linho e do Mundo Rural. According to the municipal tourism information, the Cávado and Homem rivers are also suitable for canoeing.

Visitors are invited to discover the traditional Loiças de Prado and the characteristic features of local ceramic production, and then work with clay on the potter’s wheel.

Wine is also part of the character of the area. Vinho verde is produced on the slopes of Vila Verde. The Museu do Vinho e da Vinha is located in the building of the former Adega Cooperativa de Vila Verde. Its permanent exhibition offers an interactive, immersive and engaging journey through various dimensions of the world of wine. The museum also focuses on wine tourism and promoting local flavours. Traditional cuisine includes arroz de frango “pica no chão”; Pudim Abade de Priscos is also part of Vila Verde’s gastronomic heritage.

Local history and regional routes

For days devoted to culture, consider the Capela de Santo António in the centre of Vila Verde and the Conjunto do Largo de São Sebastião ensemble. The chapel stands on elevated ground opposite Av. António Sérgio. The ensemble comprises a chapel, a wayside cross, a tower and a fountain. The centre of Vila Verde also lies on a pilgrimage route to Compostela. The main route of the Caminho Minhoto Ribeiro begins in Braga and heads towards Vila Verde, Ponte da Barca, Arcos de Valdevez and Monção before crossing the border at Melgaço.

Another regional speciality is the tradition of Corrida e o Testamento do Galo. According to the memory of the elders, it can be traced back to the mid-19th century; the school community of EB 1 de Francelos in Vila de Prado keeps it alive. In this way, Vila Verde combines experiences of the landscape with crafts, culinary discoveries and traditional customs.
