Cabeceiras de Basto
Cabeceiras de Basto combines the landscape of the Serra da Cabreira with historic sites, regional traditions and varied trails. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home can choose their location based on their own plans: the focus may be on long hikes, a family discovery tour of museums and church art, or days filled with nature, views and regional culture.
Hiking trails for different day plans
The Ecopista do Tâmega offers its own form of exercise: the 39-kilometre cycle path connects Arco de Baúlhe via Celorico de Basto with Amarante. It follows a former railway line, has a maximum gradient of 3 per cent and features rest areas with views of the landscape. You can take these details into account when planning your day.
Several hiking trails, by contrast, lead directly into the landscape of the Serra da Cabreira. The approximately 10-kilometre Trilho de Torrinheiras begins in the mountain village of Torrinheiras and leads to a viewpoint with 360-degree views of the Gerês, Alvão, Marão and Barroso mountain ranges. The Trilho do Pisão e Nariz do Mundo starts in Formigueiro and descends steeply to Pisão on the Ribeira de Cavez. Along the Ribeira de Cavez, the Trilho da Ribeira de Cavez connects the landscape with traditional irrigation channels, mills and irrigated meadows.
The Trilho da Levada de Víbora follows an old irrigation channel that was once essential for operating the watermills of Moinhos de Rei. Moinhos de Rei itself is a group of mills built during the reign of King D. Dinis. When choosing your accommodation, it is therefore worth first considering whether you primarily want to experience a cycle route, a viewpoint or a hike along waterways.
Culture and history of Cabeceiras de Basto
The Museu das Terras de Basto is a municipal museum with three sections and opened on 24 May 2004. The Núcleo de Arte Sacra displays religious art from the 15th to the 20th century, including paintings, sculptures, textiles, ceramics, glass, furniture and metalwork. At the Mosteiro de S. Miguel de Refojos, which existed by the beginning of the 12th century at the latest, operating rules apply to public visits in order to protect the Benedictine monastery and preserve a peaceful religious environment.
Casa do Tempo and Casa da Lã in Bucos offer further insights. Casa do Tempo is a multimedia interpretation centre devoted to the history, customs, nature, territory and people of Cabeceiras de Basto; it also promotes seminars, meetings and exhibitions related to these objectives. As an interpretation centre, Casa da Lã is dedicated to wool processing. Casa do Pão displays bread-making equipment donated by residents of Travassô in Abadim. With advance registration, groups can watch bread being baked and taste it.
Other prominent historic sites include the Ponte de Cavez over the Tâmega, which is classified as a National Monument, and the Statue of Basto on Praça da República in Refojos. It depicts a Lusitanian warrior. The former dispatch warehouse of the Núcleo Ferroviário de Arco de Baúlhe hosts temporary exhibitions on the tangible and intangible heritage of Cabeceiras de Basto.
Nature, water and regional festivals
Wild plant and animal species have been preserved in the Serra da Cabreira in several municipalities of Cabeceiras de Basto. The Moinhos de Rei recreational area includes a picnic area, a facility for promoting wildlife, a deer enclosure and several viewpoints. The Zona de Banhos do Poço do Frade is a bathing area for water activities on the Rio de Ouro in the centre of the Vila de Cabeceiras de Basto; there is no lifeguard service there.
The festivals also give a stay its own rhythm. The Festa de São Bartolomeu de Cavez takes place on 23 and 24 August on the banks of the Tâmega and on the bridge between its two banks. The Festa em Honra de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios in Arco de Baúlhe runs from Friday to Sunday on the first weekend of September and includes a candlelit procession as well as a procession on Sunday afternoon. The Festa das Papas features blessed papas, cornbread, bacon and wine, which are served at a shared outdoor meal.
