Luz is an exciting starting point for anyone who wants to combine nature experiences, activity and culture on a trip. The Subida ao Cume route begins right in the centre, opposite the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Luz. From there, the landscape experience continues to remarkable volcanic and historic highlights.

Hiking trails with different focuses

The Subida ao Cume route runs mostly within the Monumento Natural da Caldeira da Graciosa natural monument. It leads to the island’s highest point, at 405 metres, and offers expansive views of the landscape. This makes it an interesting choice for travellers who want to get to know Luz’s character through a longer nature experience. In a travel group with different interests, this trail can be combined with further sightseeing or a quieter part of the day.

The Baía da Folga route offers a different focus. It begins in the centre of Luz, near the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Luz, and leads to Baía da Folga, which is considered a bathing area near the Freguesia da Luz. While the Subida ao Cume focuses on the ridge, the island’s highest point and the volcanic landscape, the second trail heads towards the bay. This distinction helps you plan your day when choosing between scenery, activity and time by the water.

Volcanic highlights around Furna do Enxofre

The Subida ao Cume leads to Furna do Enxofre, a unique volcanic cave. It is 194 metres long and 40 metres high. Inside, there is a freshwater lake and a mud mofette. The Furna do Enxofre visitor centre has information panels and monitors displaying the gas levels measured in the cave. The first stage of the Grande Rota da Graciosa (East) also offers another way to include Luz in a longer hike. Its Barra–Praia–Luz route passes through the Luz area and ends within the Freguesia da Luz. This allows you to choose between a route with a clear destination, a section of the island’s long-distance route and the path to Baía da Folga, without making every day the same.

Water architecture and Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Luz

Luz’s cultural heritage includes the ensemble of water architecture on Caminho do Tanque, Canada das Xixaras. It comprises a water basin, washing facilities, a fountain and a livestock watering trough. The complex illustrates how different elements related to water belong together, complementing the nature experiences with an insight into local design and use.

The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Luz was completed in 1738. Its predecessor dated from the 16th century and was destroyed by the 1730 earthquake. Inside are a life-size depiction of Saint Joseph, a depiction of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and a contemporary depiction of Our Lady of Luz from the second decade of the 20th century.
