Faja: Hiking Trail, Volcanic Landscape and Island History
Accommodation in Faja
When planning a stay in Faja, several questions take centre stage: How much time would you like to set aside for hiking, which volcanic formations interest you, and are you more drawn to architectural history or everyday culture? The PR1 GRA hiking trail provides a concrete time frame; the landscape of Serra Branca and the history of Graciosa add further topics.
The PR1 GRA as a concrete time frame
Faja is listed as a place along the PR1 GRA Serra Branca–Praia hiking trail. The trail is linear, nine kilometres long and classified as easy. The average walking time is given as two hours and 30 minutes. Its length and estimated time provide a concrete guide for planning your day; check the trail conditions locally before setting off.
The trail begins by circling the volcanic vent Caldeirinha do Pêro Botelho. This geological feature is also known as Caldeirinha or Algar dos Diabretes and is designated as a geosite. For families interested in volcanoes, the names offer a shared thread of discovery: from the volcanic vent to its geological classification as a geosite.
Volcanic formations and landscape
The cliffs of Serra Branca reach heights of around 340 metres in places, northwest of Ponta Branca. In Baía do Filipe, there is a transition between the trachytic rocks of Serra Branca and the basaltic formations at the foot of the Caldeira volcano. The geological features there include significant submarine Surtseyan tuff outcrops, which represent the early formation phase of the Caldeira volcano.
A short linear route starts at Pico da Caldeirinha de Pêro Botelho, a volcanic vent about 37 metres deep, and circles the crater of the volcanic cone formed by lava spatter. The site is designated as a geosite of the UNESCO Geopark because of its geological importance. The landscape is also classified: Faja and Esperança Velha belong to landscape unit G3, “Pastagens da Encosta de Serra Branca”.
Near Faja, a hiking trail passes through the abandoned settlement of Faja and by numerous fields and pastures. This landscape offers a different perspective from the volcanic formations: here, the focus is on settlement history and the surroundings shaped by fields and pastures.
Church history, everyday culture and local sweets
The church of Guadalupe replaced a chapel dating from the 16th century. Construction took about 50 years because earthquake damage had severely affected the parish. The church’s history thus connects a specific building with a long construction period and the effects of earthquakes on the parish.
The Casa Museu João Tomaz Bettencourt is a 19th-century house that serves as a shop museum. The entire interior was assembled by the people of Graciosa over the course of a 23-year collection effort. Exhibitions and reconstructions present the everyday life of Graciosa’s people from the late 19th century to the mid-1980s. In the village section of the route, visitors are also encouraged to try the star-shaped, very sweet Queijadas da Graciosa.
When choosing your holiday apartment in Faja, it helps to decide what you would like to focus on: the PR1 offers a concrete day hike, with its stated length and average walking time; geology, church architecture and everyday culture offer other topics to explore on your trip. Consider which of these interests you would like to shape your stay.
