Vale De Cambra: Hiking Trails, Nature and Culture

Vale De Cambra is a destination for anyone who wants to combine experiences in nature with regional history and lively traditions. The PR2 hiking trail, “Caminhos de Antigamente”, begins next to the Igreja Matriz de S. Pedro de Castelões and follows the former pilgrimage route to the Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Saúde. The PR3, “Vereda do Pastor”, starts in Côvo, the highest-altitude village in the municipality of Vale De Cambra on the southern slope of the Serra da Freita. At the Ribeira das Estacas, this trail crosses a stone footbridge.

Further options are provided by the PR4, “Trebilhadouro”, and the PR5, “Aldeias do Arestal”. The PR4 runs along the slopes of the Serra da Freita near the Barragem Engº Duarte Pacheco on the Rio Caima. The PR5 begins in Gestoso at the Santuário da Senhora da Saúde. In the area around the Capela de S. Tiago, there is a recreation area with picnic tables. This hiking trail also offers views of the coast and the inland mountain ranges – from the coastal area between Espinho and the Serra da Boa Viagem to the mountain ranges of Montemuro and Estrela.

If you are looking for a shorter hiking idea, the PR8, “Varandas da Freita”, follows the old route from Felgueira towards Castanheira. A short detour leads to the Falha da Felgueira-Preguinho viewpoint. Felgueira lies amid the green nature of the Serra da Freita and beside the clear waters of the Rio Cabrum. Traditional granite houses with slate roofs give the village its distinctive appearance.

Rivers, peat bogs and distinctive landscapes

Even away from the signposted trails, Vale De Cambra reveals its landscape diversity. The Poço do Linho waterfall lies at the entrance to the village of Paraduça on the Ribeira de Paraduça. The Moinhos de Paraduça consist of five watermills with granite walls, slate roofs and one pair of millstones each. They are part of the Grande Rota das Montanhas Mágicas and the Rota da Água e da Pedra.

In the Rota da Água e da Pedra, Vale De Cambra belongs to the Arestal, Caima and Freita routes. The section in the municipality includes 15 points of interest across three route lines. The wooded areas of the Levada de Santa Cruz provide a habitat for the Iberian rock lizard, the Iberian frog and the otter. The Turfeiras da Freita are located in the Serras da Freita e Arada Natura 2000 site (PTCON0047) and are among the rarest and most diverse habitats in the mountains there.

Culture and regional traditions

The Museu Municipal de Vale De Cambra is located in the former town hall of Macieira de Cambra, a 19th-century building. The municipality’s industrial heritage is a particular focus. The museum offers guided tours and educational activity programmes. The year is marked by local festivals. The traditional Marchas de Santo António have taken place every year since 1984. In Felgueira, the Festa de São Tiago and the Nossa Senhora da Liberação festival are celebrated annually. During the Christmas season, the Roteiro Presépios Comunitários showcases a living tradition that began in Arões and Junqueira and now encompasses the entire municipality of Vale De Cambra.
