Estarreja: Nature, Culture and Regional Experiences
Estarreja combines nature experiences, urban art, museums, traditional festivals and regional cuisine. Anyone planning a trip here can choose between a circular route through the landscape, walks along the Antuã, cultural discoveries and lively events. This combination makes the town appealing to anyone who does not want to spend every day of their holiday in the same way.
Nature around BioRia and the Antuã
A good starting point for an active day plan is the Salreu circular route. It begins and ends at the BioRia Environmental Interpretation Centre. The route is approximately 8 km long and takes around two and a half hours. It is classified as easy because it has no changes in elevation. Take the approximate length and duration into account when planning and decide whether this circular route should be the focus of your day.
The Parque Municipal do Antuã offers a different perspective on nature. The park covers approximately 4.6 hectares and lies between the town of Estarreja and the riverbed of the Antuã. A wooden boardwalk runs along part of the riverbank. There, you can observe the local wildlife and plant life and learn more from the information panels. This allows you to combine your visit with quiet moments of observation and a walk by the water.
The ObservaRia – Estarreja Birdwatching Fair also focuses on nature and birdwatching. Its extensive programme includes activities related to birdwatching, nature tourism, photography, science communication, environmental education and raising awareness of environmental protection. The programme also includes field excursions. The lecture series of the ObservaRia – Estarreja Birdwatching Fair is open to all citizens.
Museums, urban art and historical images
The Museu Fábrica da História – Arroz is housed in the renovated building of the former Hidro-Eléctrica de Estarreja, a former rice-husking factory. The Casa-Museu Marieta Solheiro Madureira was transformed from a residence designed in the late 1940s into a house museum. Both places give Estarreja a cultural dimension that differs from its nature-based offerings.
Art is also present in public spaces: since September 2016, the streets of Estarreja, together with ESTAU, have become a museum of urban art. Guided tours of the ESTAU urban art route last approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. Mercado Antigo depicts life at the end of the 19th century and in the mid-1940s through historical reconstructions. If you are interested in local history, design and everyday life in the past, you can specifically incorporate these themes into your travel plans.
Festivals and regional cuisine
The Carnaval de Estarreja has been celebrated since 1897. Every year, it attracts tens of thousands of visitors to its children’s and adults’ parades, which involve more than 2,000 performers. The Carnaval de Estarreja also offers visits to its backstage area. In this way, the festival combines the visible parades with an insight into the preparation and organisation behind them.
Traditional festivals include the Festas de Santo António de Estarreja, held in honour of the municipality’s patron saint. During the Marchas Populares in honour of Santo António, hundreds of costumed performers parade through Estarreja with themes drawn from popular and traditional culture. Regional cuisine is also part of the annual calendar: every year, gastronomic festivals called “Tasquinhas de Gastronomia Regional” are held in all the municipalities of the Estarreja municipality. They serve, among other things, Rojões, eel dishes, dishes made with Broa and typical regional sweets.
