Fornos: River Heritage and Routes Through the Freguesia
Accommodation in Fornos
Fornos brings together river history, rural paths and traces from several centuries. Between the Paiva and the Douro, very different discoveries sit side by side: an island with an archaeological past, a former river port, and paths leading to landscapes and built heritage throughout the freguesia. For your holiday planning, this offers a specific choice of themes to shape your time in Fornos around.
River History on the Paiva and the Douro
Lugar do Castelo was an old river port at the mouth of the Rio Paiva where it meets the Douro. This historical context gives the place a distinctive perspective on the two rivers. Ilha do Castelo adds to the picture: it is the only island along the Portuguese stretch of the Douro and is also popularly known as Ilha dos Amores.
Archaeological investigations on the island uncovered the remains of a 15th-century hermitage. Here, the island’s striking location in the river sits alongside a specific link to the place’s history. The PR 1 CPV “Ilha dos Amores” starts and ends at Cais do Castelo beside the island. Its name draws on the popular name Ilha dos Amores.
The PR 1 CPV Through Fornos
The route follows rural and traditional paths through a large part of the Freguesia de Fornos. It passes the Capela de Santo António, the Largo Paroquial with the Velho Cruzeiro de Fornos, and the Várzea de Fornos. This landscape offers one of the most beautiful views in the freguesia. The route also passes the former Leirós soft-drink factory.
The Igreja de São Pelágio de Fornos can also be seen from the route. São Pelágio is the patron saint of the freguesia. The combination of the route and its built heritage makes the PR 1 CPV an opportunity to take in the landscape and local history together. As trail conditions can vary, it is advisable to check the current situation before setting out.
Additional Options and Historical Traces

Further traces of the past can be found in the historic settlement of Castelo, where several 19th-century houses can be seen. Quinta da Cardia is also part of Fornos’s historical character; it appears to have existed since the 15th century. These different traces of time can be considered as themes for your trip alongside the river history and walking routes.
