Discover Arouca: Trails, Culture and Regional Festivals
Arouca combines varied trails, a distinctive cultural landscape and vibrant regional traditions. Those wishing to combine experiences in nature with history during their holiday will find a range of options for planning their days: an almost 11-kilometre route on foot or by bicycle, museums and religious buildings, as well as festivals with markets, gastronomy and activities for children.
Exploring the Ecovia do Arda and the Passadiços do Paiva
The Ecovia do Arda begins at Parque da Feira in Vila de Arouca and is almost 11 kilometres long. It can be covered on foot or by bicycle. Along the route, information panels provide details about the geology, biodiversity and history of this part of the Arouca Geopark, a UNESCO Global Geopark. This makes it possible to combine physical activity with a closer look at the landscape.
Another option for an active excursion is the Passadiços do Paiva in the vicinity of Arouca. The route is 8 kilometres long and runs between Areinho and Espiunca; the entrances are also in the vicinity of Arouca. When planning your trip, you can choose between the Ecovia do Arda, with its starting point at Parque da Feira, and the Passadiços do Paiva between Areinho and Espiunca.
Museum, Monastery and Historic Buildings
The Museu Municipal de Arouca preserves the memories and traditions of a population with a distinctly rural character. It also presents the municipality’s biodiversity, as well as its archaeological and geological heritage. For orientation before your visit, it is useful to know that the museum has areas for permanent exhibitions and an area for temporary exhibitions.
The Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Arouca stands on the main road of Vila de Arouca. It has been documented since the 10th century and was used exclusively as a convent for women from 1154 onwards. Renovations in the 17th and 18th centuries profoundly altered the monastery. The Igreja do Mosteiro contains paintings, sculptures and rich gilded woodcarvings; it is also home to the reliquary urn of Santa Mafalda.
Further historical highlights include the Capela da Misericórdia, built in 1612 at the request of worshippers, and the Calvário. The latter comprises six 17th-century crosses that form part of a Stations of the Cross, and offers wide-ranging views over Arouca. The Casa dos Malafaias consists of building sections dating mainly from the 16th and 17th centuries and constructed from granite. Because it is privately owned, it can only be viewed from the outside.
Regional Festivals and Seasonal Impressions
The Feira das Colheitas brings the centre of Arouca to life for four days with markets, concerts, exhibitions, agricultural competitions, ethnographic and livestock parades, folklore, activities for children and gastronomy. It was established in 1944 to enhance the status of agriculture and promote agricultural activity. The Festival da Castanha takes place every year on the last weekend of October. The programme includes food areas, a fair for handicrafts and regional products, workshops, chestnut-roasting events, hiking and cycling activities, as well as mushroom walks.
The Right Accommodation for Your Travel Plans
When looking for a holiday apartment in Arouca, it is worth deciding on your preferred focus first. If you would like to place culture and local history at the centre of your plans, you can organise your itinerary around the museum, monastery, church and historic buildings. For active days, the Ecovia do Arda or the Passadiços do Paiva offer specific destinations instead. Those travelling with children can also take the period of the Feira das Colheitas into account because of its explicitly mentioned activities for children. This keeps the choice of accommodation closely connected to your own excursion plans, without requiring a particular type of accommodation or specific amenities.
