Culture in distinctive venues

The National Museum in Szczecin looks after more than 150,000 objects relating to art, archaeology, nautical history, ethnography and numismatics. Its exhibits focus particularly on Pomeranian and Baltic subjects. The Museum of Technology and Communication also has a clear focus: it is housed in a historic tram depot dating from 1912 and is one of Poland’s largest technical museums. Exhibits include trams, buses, cars, motorcycles, bicycles and other technical objects.

The Renaissance Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes stands on a hill near the Oder. The castle houses galleries, a cinema and a theatre, and also hosts cultural and educational activities. The city offers other options for music and theatre, too: the Mieczysław Karłowicz Philharmonic is considered a contemporary architectural icon thanks to its new building. Tours of the building last about 60 minutes and include the foyer, the chamber and symphony halls, the gallery on the fourth floor and the souvenir shop. They are offered on selected Fridays; dates may change. Opera na Zamku presents operas, operettas, ballet, musicals, concerts, open-air events, performances for children and guided tours.

Views of the Oder, parks and trails

Wały Chrobrego is 500 metres long and stands 19 metres above the level of the Oder riverbank. It offers views of the Oder and the harbour. The city’s green spaces offer a different perspective: you can walk and cycle in Jasne Błonia, while Kasprowicza Park is Szczecin’s largest park. In the city’s northwest, the Głębokie Forest Park covers about 350 hectares and includes Lake Głębokie. A walking and cycling path runs around the lake.

For getting your bearings around the city, the seven-kilometre urban trail links 42 sights and places of interest. It starts and ends in front of Szczecin’s main railway station. The Golden Route begins at the Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes, passes through city parks and forests, and continues into the heart of the forest. The “Szczecin – Port City on the Oder” route starts near the Chamber of Tax Administration and can be reached by public transport at the Celna stop; check connections before setting out. If you are planning a cycling route, “Jez. Głębokie – Oder” is a suggested 16-kilometre route. Check trail conditions and signage in advance. The different details can help you choose a route by theme and length without confusing it with the urban trail.

Water and a special place of remembrance

Fabryka Wody combines water-based attractions with a science theme: the complex includes an educational centre, connected to a laboratory, that focuses on water. The water park has 21 pools with a total water surface area of more than 2,400 square metres. It also has a sauna area with 15 themed rooms. These numbers may change if the complex is redeveloped.

Szczecin Central Cemetery covers 172.33 hectares and is considered the largest cemetery in Poland and the third-largest in Europe. A historical walking tour leads through its oldest section. Check local conditions before visiting. In previous years, the summer programmes at Różany Ogród Sztuki repeatedly featured concerts, dance events and workshops on Saturdays and Sundays.
