Kalisz Pomorski between Lakes and History

Kalisz Pomorski combines a lakeside setting with distinctive traces of its architectural and local history. Four lakes, an unusually shaped water tower at the railway station, a Neoclassical church, and features such as a sculpture and mural give a stay a range of different highlights. A lake landscape with a history of its own

Kalisz Pomorski lies between four lakes that, around two centuries ago, formed a single large lake. There is also a direct water connection between Bobrowo Wielkie and Bobrowo Małe: a canal links them, and the two lakes were once one. At Kalisz Pomorski’s municipal bathing beach, the waters of Bobrowo Wielkie are fed exclusively by underground springs. Those interested in lake landscapes will find both the story of a former large lake and the canal between the two Bobrowo lakes as distinctive points of interest.

Water tower and Neoclassical church

The water tower at the railway station was built towards the end of the 19th century, probably around 1888. It is oval and belongs to the “Grzybek” type; its wide, projecting tank and conical roof with a raised lantern give the structure its distinctive shape. The Church of Matki Bożej Królowej Polski offers a different architectural accent. The Neoclassical church was built between 1772 and 1781, after a major fire and the demolition of the medieval church. Their contrasting forms and periods make both buildings distinctive landmarks in the town’s history.

Sculpture, mural and restored object

The “Ogórek Beczuś” sculpture stands by the town hall. At the beach, a mural dedicated to Beczuś was created on an almost 100-metre-long wall. Another local feature is the restored “Kamień szlifierski” object: it was returned to its former location in the grove by Młyńskie Lake and lies along the Leśna Ścieżka Edukacyjna. The three examples differ in form—a sculpture, a mural and a restored object at its former location—and complement the major buildings with striking details.

Jarmark Ogórkowy and local tradition

Since 2005, the Jarmark Ogórkowy has been part of local tradition as an annual festival. The programme includes cooking demonstrations and craft workshops. This gives a stay around the time of the fair a different focus from a trip centred mainly on the lake landscape or architectural history.
