Białogard combines medieval town history with cycle routes, river landscapes and distinctive moraine hills. The Białogard region can therefore be explored in different ways: by bike, on foot, from the water or by following historical traces. Which holiday apartment makes a suitable base depends above all on which of these aspects you would like to focus on during your trip.
Cycling between town history and landscape
One cycle route connects Białogard and Karlino and is part of the Stary Kolejowy Szlak Rowerowy. Another, short cycle route runs between Białogard and Moczyłki: it is just under 2 km long, 2.5 m wide and has a bituminous surface. These details provide a concrete measure of the route without allowing a travel time to be inferred.
The history of settlement is also linked to a cycle route. The route following the oldest traces of settlement in the Białogard region begins on Płowiecka Street, at the site of an early medieval fortified settlement. It originally lay between the Parsęta and Leśnica rivers. The route passes Jezioro Rybackie, which offers opportunities for fishing and relaxation. More than 1,000 years ago, a pile-dwelling settlement stood in the southern part of the lake—a remarkable historical connection to this landscape.
Exploring on foot and on the water
Two different, unmarked routes are available for walks. The circular route around Białogard passes through Rościno, Lulewice, Żelimucha, Kościernica, Pomianowo, Dargikowo and Klępino Białogardzkie before returning to Białogard; it can be completed in a day. The second route follows the railway embankment of the former narrow-gauge railway. It runs through Kisielice, Łęczno, Nasutowo, Zagórze and Podwilcze to Rarwino and is 20 km long. Its course along the former railway embankment gives it a different historical connection from the circular route.
Those who prefer to be on the water can go canoeing on the Parsęta, Radew, Pokrzywnica and Chotla rivers. In Białogard, there is a canoe station on Szpitalna Street, with a floating jetty on the Parsęta. Riding lessons are offered at stables in Dargikowo, Lulewiczki and Nawino.
Town walls, hills and river valleys
Białogard's historical features include preserved remains of medieval town walls, with Brama Wysoka and shell towers. Brama Wysoka, also known as Połczyńska, was built together with the town walls at the beginning of the 14th century. The surviving sections of the wall can be accessed via Matejki Street. They illustrate the defensive structures typical of a medium-sized Pomeranian town.
The surrounding hills offer different views. Góra Kościernicka is an exposed moraine hill; from there, panoramic views open up over Białogard, which lies in the valley. East of the town, Góra Niwka rises as a kame hill above a marshy hollow, offering views of Białogard and Góra Kościernicka. In the municipality of Białogard, the natural landscape is also shaped by river valleys, forest lakes, ponds, peat bogs, moraine hills, kames and forests.
The Parsęta gorge between Rzyszewo, Tychówko, Osówko and Wicewo is a particularly prominent river valley. It is deeply incised and features side valleys, marked changes in elevation and deciduous forest. Rzyszewo lies outside the area, in the municipality of Tychowo. In Czarnowęsy, the 23.38 ha palace park lies on the southern bank of the Mogilnica.
