Busko-Zdrój can be discovered through very different impressions: a historic landscape park, a brine graduation tower complex, contemporary art and hiking trails with clearly marked distances. The spa town’s character thus spans landscaped green spaces, art and architecture, as well as marked routes.
Spa Park: Plenty of Space for Greenery and Exercise
Park Zdrojowy is a historic landscape park covering more than 14 hectares. Henryk Marconi laid out the park in the 19th century, and the gardener Ignacy Hanusz designed its landscaped areas. The park is ideal for walking, jogging and Nordic walking. It also features the “Aleja Marzeń” promenade, tennis courts, a concert shell and a playground.
More than 14 hectares offer a very different scale from Busko-Zdrój’s individual buildings: the park is about the design of a large green space, while the Marconi Sanatorium and St. Anne’s Chapel are about specific architectural histories and details.
Brine and Art
Another distinctive feature is the brine graduation tower complex, built in 2020 in the new Spa Park. Brine flows over walls filled with blackthorn branches and evaporates extensively there, making the complex a natural inhalatorium. Whereas the landscape and its design are central to the park, the impression made by the graduation tower complex comes from the interplay of brine and branch-filled walls.
The Buska Galeria Sztuki Willa Polonia showcases contemporary art as well as works by local artists. Its four exhibition rooms are used for exhibitions; meetings, talks and workshops can also be held there. The gallery thus combines the presentation of art with space for a range of event formats.
Historic Architecture in the Spa Town
The former Łazienki building is now the Marconi Sanatorium. The Italian architect Henryk Marconi designed the building, which opened in 1836. The sanatorium has a concert hall whose doors are decorated with statues of Orpheus and Eurydice. These details bring architecture and Greek mythology together, without implying that the concert hall is open to the public.
The Neo-Gothic St. Anne’s Chapel stands in the eastern part of the Spa Park. It was built in 1884 at the initiative of Dr. Aleksander Dobrzański and with the support of local residents. Its history thus extends beyond individual architects to include the people who initiated and supported its construction.
Hiking Trails of Different Lengths
If you would like to plan a marked hiking route as well as walks in the park, there are two options of different lengths. The black hiking trail runs for 5.5 kilometres from Busko-Zdrój to Zbrodzice. At 27 kilometres, the considerably longer red hiking trail connects the spa towns of Busko and Solec.
