Strzyżów combines a distinctive cultural history with opportunities for active days. A Gothic church, a former synagogue now used as a library, and an underground railway shelter tunnel offer different historical highlights. The Wisłok, a cycling route that starts and ends in town, and the Park Wodny round out the options. You can tailor your trip to whether you’d most like to explore culture, spend time outdoors or enjoy being by the water.

Cultural history in Strzyżów

The Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Corpus Christi is Gothic and dates from the second half of the 15th century. The locally venerated image of Our Lady of Strzyżów is displayed at the altar. The building and the image each offer a distinct connection: to the town’s history and its religious tradition.

The former synagogue’s use also tells a story of change: the building was constructed at the end of the 18th century and now houses the Miejsko-Gminna Biblioteka Publiczna im. Juliana Przybosia. Another site of Jewish history is the cemetery, established in 1850. It is the only surviving one of the town’s three former Jewish cemeteries. Together, these places reveal different facets of Strzyżów’s past.

The Muzeum Samorządowe Ziemi Strzyżowskiej displays drawings and prints by Wojciech Weiss, created in Strzyżów. The shelter tunnel adds an unusual structure to these historical sites: it was built underground beneath Mount Żarnowska, lies in the eastern part of town and is 438 metres long. The complex also includes bunkers for technical infrastructure. The tunnel is temporarily closed to visitors; check its visitor status before you travel.

On foot, by bike and by the water

The green hiking trail leads south from Strzyżów and passes through Godowa and Brzeżanka. Check local signage before setting out. There is also a circular cycling route, Strzyżów–Żarnowa–Strzyżów: it starts and ends in Strzyżów, is about 10 kilometres long, is easy to ride and is marked in purple. The two routes offer different ways to plan an active day: a ride that starts and ends in town, or a hiking trail that continues south.

The Wisłok flows through the centre of Strzyżów. Canoeing on the river is one way to enjoy active recreation in nature. Water conditions and provider availability can vary; if you’re planning a trip, check the details in advance.

For swimming and water fun, Park Wodny Strzyżów offers several options: the 25-metre sports pool has six lanes. There is also a separate swimming-instruction pool with a variable depth of 0.9 metres. The leisure area includes a wild-water channel with a strong current, underwater geysers, whirlpools for six and twelve people, and a 60-metre water slide. Check the latest operating information before you travel.

Choose the right focus for your stay

When looking for a holiday apartment, the kind of daily routine you want can be a useful starting point. If you’d like to focus on Strzyżów’s history, the church, former synagogue, cemetery and museum offer different subjects to explore. For outdoor activity, consider the cycling route and green hiking trail; water activities include both the Wisłok and Park Wodny, which offer different experiences. This way, you can start planning with the experiences that genuinely interest you, rather than making assumptions about individual accommodations.
