The Sanctuary and the History of the Place

Kalwaria Pacławska is a Franciscan sanctuary and monastery. Pilgrims come for the liturgy, devotional routes and prayer before the miraculous image of Our Lady of Kalwaria. The history of the place and monastery dates back to 1660. After returning from a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, Andrzej Maksymilian Fredro decided to recreate in Poland places associated with the Passion of Christ. This history gives the chapels and devotional routes their special connection.

The Calvary chapel complex comprises 41 structures, mostly made of masonry, as well as some wooden ones. There is also a wooden cross and three stone pillars. The complex invites you to consider the architecture not only as individual buildings, but also in the context of the religious history of the place.

Wooden Chapels and the Character of the Village

The construction of the houses also shapes the character of Kalwaria Pacławska. Many wooden houses are built using a post-and-beam structure and have arcaded porches. There are also several buildings in the Boyko style, in which the living and farm areas are connected. The village’s buildings thus offer a variety of forms, from decorated arcaded porches to combined living and working spaces.

The Pustelnia św. Marii Magdaleny is a small, simple wooden chapel with a shingle roof. It stands on a hill where a rampart once stood; remains of the earthworks are still visible. The wooden chapel św. Marii Magdaleny dates from 1870. Other examples include the wooden “Trzy Marie” chapel from 1873, restored after 1945, and the “U Prokli” chapel from 1863. Together with the larger chapel complex, these buildings show different facets of local sacred architecture.

Planning Routes and Views

The “Kalwaria Pacławska” nature and history trail runs for about half its length through the “Kalwaria Pacławska” nature reserve. On this section, you may only walk along the designated trail. This restriction is part of planning your route. From the observation tower, the view stretches northeast over the Wiar Valley, surrounding villages, wooded hills and the border landscape. Access to the tower is seasonal and supervised; check the current visiting arrangements locally.

The pilgrimage routes also offer different experiences. The John Paul II Pilgrimage Route leads from Przemyśl to the sanctuary in Kalwaria Pacławska; check local route information before setting out. The Stations of the Cross begin at the “U Piłata” chapel in Gradusy and lead through the forest over Calvary to the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre.

Museums and Places to Visit

Places open to visitors shed light on the history of the sanctuary, devotion to Our Lady of Kalwaria and the Franciscans’ missionary presence. The Kalwaria Museum covers the origins, founding and development of the place. Dedicated rooms focus on Andrzej Maksymilian Fredro, the founder of Kalwaria Pacławska, and Szczepan Józef Dwernicki, who expanded the site.
