Mielec: Market Square, Baroque Basilica and Forest Park

Mielec offers two distinct ways to experience a stay: the historic townscape around the Market Square and the glacially shaped landscape of Góra Cyranowska Forest Park. In the city, history and architecture take centre stage; in the park, natural history and opportunities for exercise and play. Families can plan their trip to alternate between time in the city and outdoor activities.

Market Square and Basilica: Mielec’s historic side

The Market Square was created as the centre of the town’s first development, founded by Jan and Bernardyn Mielecki on 18 November 1470. Following its renovation in 2011, the square is surrounded by historic townhouses, paths and green spaces. In the evenings, the fountain puts on a colourful water display. Visitors can pause among the buildings and experience the square as an open public space.

Near the old town’s Market Square, the Basilica of St. Matthew stands on Tadeusza Kościuszki Street. Built in the Baroque style between 1670 and 1721, it is the oldest surviving religious building in Mielec. The Market Square and the Basilica thus offer two concrete points of reference for exploring the city’s cultural history: the early centre of its development and an important building from a later period.

Góra Cyranowska Forest Park: Landscape and activity

Leśny “Góra Cyranowska” Park lies on a sand dune formed during the Pleistocene. The area is wooded, and its highest point is 185 metres above sea level. The landscape’s origins give a stay among the greenery a distinct connection to natural history; a cycle path also runs through the entire park.

On the northern slope is a 116-metre-long toboggan run, considered a winter attraction for the youngest residents. Its use depends on winter conditions. Other places for activity and play are located in different parts of the park: the western section has two slides and a large play area with a soft polyurethane surface. At the southern entrance, there is a gabion maze for children, with lighting and benches. The park can therefore be explored through its specific offerings, without treating the cycle path, play areas and winter toboggan run as the same experience.

Photography and stops along the COP Route

The “Jadernówka” Museum of Photography has photographic exhibits spanning a long period, from the second half of the 19th century to the end of the 20th century. This time span offers a different way to explore Mielec than the architectural history around the Market Square.

Another cultural trail leads along the COP Route in Mielec. It runs along Aleja Niepodległości and through the “Kolonia PZL” housing estate. Its stops include the department heads’ house, the deputy directors’ official semi-detached house and the general director’s official villa. The different building types give the route an architectural focus.
