Nature and trails in the municipality

The Madohora Nature Reserve lies within the municipality of Ślemień; part of the protected area is in the Silesian Voivodeship. An open section of the blue PTTK hiking trail connects Smerkowicę with Przełęcz pod Madohorą and continues towards Ślemień. These endpoints and the continuation provide clear orientation along the route. When planning, it makes a difference whether you want to focus on this section of the hiking trail or devote your stay mainly to cultural sites.

In the nature reserve, a designated footpath follows a forest road and a trail to Jaskinia Komonieckiego, also known as Grota Komonieckiego. The path leads to the cave, but entering it is dangerous and is not permitted under the current access rules. The distinction is important: the footpath is described, but the cave itself may not be entered. If you plan to explore the Madohora trails, you should therefore limit your visit to the permitted route.

Village life at the open-air museum

The Żywiecki Park Etnograficzny in Ślemień is an open-air museum. Its layout recreates the settlement pattern and buildings of a village in the Żywiec Beskids. Seventeen historic architectural structures, mostly wooden, have been relocated to the site. This gives the museum visit a clear focus: not just individual buildings, but a recreated village layout and the architectural forms that make it up.

The interiors are also part of the presentation. Interior furnishings have been reconstructed in the buildings, and exhibitions illustrate different aspects of Gorale life. One notable example is a complete farmstead from Rychwałd. Its residential house dates from 1895 and bears traces of the effects of the last war. The museum thus brings reconstructed interiors together with a house whose history can also be read in its traces.

Churches, pilgrimage and history

The present-day Church of St John the Baptist was built from 1842 to 1853 and consecrated in 1860. It has three naves and is made of sandstone and brick. Its main altar features an image of the church’s patron saint; the other altars are dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, St Catherine, Our Lady of the Rosary and St Alexander. The parish in Ślemień was established as early as 1672. The history of the parish and the construction period of the present-day church therefore represent different points in time.

Another religious site is the Marian shrine on Jasna Górka. Its main altar contains a venerated image of Mary, flanked by figures of St Casimir and St John Cantius, as well as a dove symbolising the Holy Spirit. According to local tradition, people have been making pilgrimages to Jasna Górka for hundreds of years. This tradition is part of the site’s history and gives it a distinct religious significance alongside its specific furnishings.

Traces of industrial history

The area’s industrial past is also part of its history. The ruins of the blast furnace in Ślemień are considered a monument to old Polish technology. The ironworks processed bog iron ore brought in by local residents, and charcoal was used as fuel.
