Szczekociny: History between Forest and the Pilica

Forests, architectural history and places of remembrance reveal different sides of Szczekociny. The town brings together Gąszcze Forest, an early Classicist castle and park ensemble, and traces of Tadeusz Kościuszko’s history. There are also trails with different themes and a kayaking trip on the Pilica.

Forest, Trails and the Pilica

Gąszcze Forest lies within Szczekociny’s city limits and covers 132.24 hectares. As a legally protected forest, it serves health and recreation purposes. Nature is therefore more than just part of the destination’s surroundings: the forest itself is a defining feature of the town. Nearby, there is also a 4.5-kilometre walking and cycling trail with a nature education focus. The trail, which opened in 2005, has eleven stations.

The 16-kilometre Kosynierów Trail has a different focus. This historical and tourist trail commemorates the Battle of Szczekociny, led by Tadeusz Kościuszko on 6 June 1794. It begins at the Tadeusz Kościuszko Monument in Szczekociny’s market square and ends outside the church in Moskorzew. A 15-kilometre kayaking trip on the Pilica is also described for the Szczekociny–Przyłęk section. This offers a choice of a nature-focused walking and cycling trail, a historical route between Szczekociny and Moskorzew, and a water route, each with its own theme and length.

For planning a trip, this distinction is more useful than a general choice between “active” and “relaxing”: the shorter trail combines walking or cycling with nature education stations, while the Kosynierów Trail focuses on a historical event and extends as far as Moskorzew. Castle Ensemble and Church Architecture

The castle and park complex in Szczekociny is an early Classicist ensemble dating from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Its layout includes a courtyard of honour, an axially arranged castle, galleries and outbuildings. The clear arrangement of its components and its historical period make the ensemble a tangible point of interest for anyone interested in architecture and historic townscapes.

The parish church of St Bartholomew also reflects several phases of construction: it was built around 1620 and extensively remodelled in the early Classicist style in 1780. The remodelling therefore took place during the same period as the castle ensemble. The two monuments thus represent different forms of remembrance and refer to different historical periods.

The town’s built heritage also includes numerous surviving wooden houses dating from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. They are located on Śląska, Lelowska, Senatorska and Żeromskiego Streets. Together with the castle complex and church, they show that Szczekociny can be explored not only through individual buildings, but also through older homes and streetscapes. This makes it possible to combine architectural history with themes of forests, water and Kościuszko on a trip that caters to different interests.
