Industrial History in Different Forms
The blast furnace at the Pokój Steelworks is part of the European Route of Industrial Heritage. The permanent exhibition at the Maksymilian Chrobok City Museum offers a broader overview spanning different periods: it presents the history of Ruda Śląska through the Industrial Revolution and economic development, from its medieval beginnings to the present day. If you want to trace the city’s development, the exhibition offers a perspective that goes well beyond a single industrial monument.
Kolonia Ficinus, on ul. Kubiny in Wirek, offers a different view of working-class history. The historic workers’ settlement was built between 1860 and 1867 for employees of the Gottessegen coal mine. It is considered the oldest surviving complex of patronal housing in Upper Silesia. Here, history can be explored not only through industrial activity, but also through the type of housing associated with a coal mine.
Historic Sites and Fortifications
The fortification complex is another distinctive trace of the city’s history. It comprises five combat bunkers and associated structures, including a traditor and an ammunition bunker. The complex is located in Godula and on the outskirts of Chropaczów and Lipiny. The combat bunkers in Godula were built in 1937 and 1938. Bunker No. 19 was equipped with an observation and combat cupola; its armament included three heavy and two light machine guns. It also had a room for an assault squad.
Another historic building now goes by a different name: Stacja Biblioteka is housed in the former railway station in the Chebzie district. Its setting in a former station building makes it a distinctive facet of the city’s history. Together with the Ficinus settlement, the blast furnace and the fortifications, it offers a range of starting points for visitors who want to explore more than one historical period.
Green Spaces and Routes
The Trakt Rudzki is a combined walking and cycling path. It connects parks, squares and sports facilities with places associated with the history of Nowy Bytom and Wirek. You can explore the route on foot or by bike, taking in both urban open spaces and historical connections as you plan your outing. Młodzieży Park is one of the green spaces named by the city as a place to spend time and relax.
For orientation, there is also Rudzka mAPPka, an interactive map of Ruda Śląska. It guides users to the city’s main attractions and accompanies them through outdoor games. This offers a different way to discover the city’s sites than choosing a theme at the city museum or taking a trip along the Trakt Rudzki.

Ruda Śląska has two railway stations, Ruda and Chebzie, on the Wrocław–Kraków railway line. If you plan to arrive by train, you can take these two stations into account when finding your way around.
