From Grodzisko to the Pier
Grodzisko in Sopot offers a glimpse into the city’s early medieval history. The open-air archaeological museum features a reconstructed fortified settlement on a hill. It includes reconstructed huts, a gate and a partially rebuilt section of palisade. The oldest archaeological finds from Sopot are on display in a modern exhibition pavilion by the pond. A visit therefore combines visible reconstructions with archaeological artefacts.
The Sopot Pier offers a very different scene: The wooden pier is 511.5 metres long and is described as the longest wooden pier in Europe. At its end is a marina with space for 103 boats. Bohaterów Monte Cassino Street, locally known as “Monciak”, leads directly to the pier. The pedestrian-only promenade and the pier thus form a distinct focus for exploring the city.
Villas, Art and Architecture
The Sopot Museum is housed in the listed Claaszen Villa, built in 1904. Dworek Sierakowskich is also part of the city’s older built heritage: it is one of the oldest buildings in Sopot. There is a small, art-inspired café in the house. Those wishing to include historic buildings and places connected with art in their itinerary will find a variety of options here.
Another historic villa is the building constructed by Fryderyk Wilhelm Jüncke in 1894. It has been restored and is home to Goyki 3 Art Inkubator, a cultural institution at ul. Jakuba Goyki 3. Krzywy Domek offers a striking contrast. The building is considered almost a landmark of Sopot and is an outstanding example of bold contemporary architecture. Its design references drawings by Jan Marcin Szancer and Per Dahlberg.
Krzywy Domek is also home to Muzeum Iluzji Sopot, with more than 20 interactive installations. It is distinct from Muzeum Iluzji Mirage, which also offers interactive exhibits, including a levitation chair, a hypnosis room and the Voltex tunnel.
Leisure, Events and Views
For an active outing, Sopockie Błonia has a mini-golf course with 20 holes, which is generally open to residents and tourists. Another leisure idea is Kolejowy Odjazd: the miniature railway has a route of more than 1,000 metres through the city’s green centre. The two attractions offer different experiences, so you need not limit your stay to just one way of exploring the city.
Sopot Hippodrome hosts international equestrian events, including the CSIO**** International Official Jumping Competitions, as well as races and other events, including those unrelated to equestrian sports. For cultural events, there is Opera Leśna: the forest amphitheatre is known for its remarkable acoustics and has a history spanning more than a hundred years. Sopot Lighthouse has a viewing point at the top of its tower.
Łysa Góra also offers a different perspective on the city: at 110 metres above sea level, it is Sopot’s highest point. On the edge of Trójmiejski Landscape Park, it has a drag lift just under 300 metres long.
