Bytów combines castle and church history with exhibitions and waterside destinations. The castle, St. Catherine’s Church with its Gothic tower, and a historic railway bridge appeal to travellers interested in architecture and history. Lake Jeleń and a canoe launch site on the Słupia offer a different focus. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can consider whether culture, lakeside recreation or a canoe trip should shape your holiday most.

Castle, Museum and Church Architecture

Bytów Castle was built between 1398 and 1405 on a rectangular plan. It is included in the Trail of Gothic Castles established in northern Poland. The north wing of the castle houses the West Kashubian Museum. It presents ethnographic collections as well as temporary exhibitions of contemporary painting, photography and folk art. This brings together different cultural formats: collections and changing exhibitions across several artistic disciplines. Those interested in these subjects can view the castle and museum as distinct aspects of Bytów’s cultural history.

St. Catherine’s Church also offers specific architectural details. It was built from 1847 to 1854 to a design by Schindler as a three-aisled hall church; the Matthäuskirche in Berlin served as its model. Its fittings include an organ dating from 1854 and two bells dating from 1820 to 1821. These details draw attention both to the building and to individual items in its interior.

The Gothic tower of St. Catherine’s Church dates from the first half of the 14th century. On four levels, it presents permanent exhibitions on archaeology and history. The tower thus adds exhibitions with their own historical focus to the architectural themes. When planning your holiday, you can distinguish between an interest in architectural forms, art and collections, and one in archaeological and historical exhibitions.

Water and Further Discoveries

The railway bridge over the Boruja offers a different heritage attraction: it is a listed historic railway monument. Lake Jeleń, meanwhile, is a lobelia lake in the northern part of Bytów and is used mainly for recreation and tourism. These two places offer different focal points from the castle and church: one features a railway monument, the other lakeside recreation.

On the Słupia between Bytów and Unichowo, the car park is located on Gołębia Góra. It serves as a canoe launch site. It is also possible to set up a camp and spend the night in tents there. The canoe launch site and overnight camping therefore offer a different kind of stay from a holiday apartment. If you choose your accommodation based on your planned interests, keep the specific locations in mind: Lake Jeleń is in the northern part of the town, while the canoe launch site is on the Słupia between Bytów and Unichowo.
