Basilica: Architecture and Art Across the Centuries
The Basilica Minor of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Sejny was built in the early 17th century in the Renaissance style; in 1973, the Holy See elevated the church to a basilica minor. The basilica houses a Gothic shrine statue of the Madonna and Child dating from the early 15th century. The organ brings together different periods, too: its Rococo case dates from 1762, while its mechanism is from 1907. These dates mark distinct phases in the creation of the case and mechanism. The Former Dominican Monastery
The former Dominican monastery complex, dating from the 17th century, is a key element of Sejny’s urban and architectural layout. Work on the monastery was completed in 1706. The complex houses exhibition halls, the “Zapiecek” Gallery, the Diocesan Museum and an ethnographic room. This room brings traces of Sejny’s cultural diversity to light. Town History and Preserved Layout
Sejny was founded in 1563 by King Sigismund Augustus. Hiking the Red Trail No. 1
As a counterpoint to the town’s historical attractions, consider the long-distance Red Hiking Trail No. 1. It is 210 kilometres long and runs from Jastrzębna via Sejny to Rakówek near Gołdap. This distance refers to the entire trail, not just the section near Sejny. The route’s scale is therefore quite different from a stay focused on the town’s buildings and cultural sites. When planning your trip, you can weigh up whether you would rather focus on Sejny’s history or on walking along the long-distance trail.
