Buildings in Mońki

The railway station in Mońki is in the town centre, west of the Białystok–Ełk DK road. It is an example of railway architecture in the manor-house style of the interwar period. The ground floor housed a buffet, a ticket office, a waiting room and a goods weighbridge. These former facilities brought catering, ticket sales, waiting and weighing goods together in one building.

The listed parish church of Our Lady of Częstochowa and Saint Casimir is one of the attractions of Mońki Municipality. It was built in the 1920s in the neo-Baroque style, to a design by Warsaw architect Stefan Szyller. Together with the railway station, it offers a concrete comparison: railway architecture in the manor-house style and a neo-Baroque place of worship represent distinct architectural accents.

Early Settlement and Traces of Manors

Traces of early settlement are associated with the so-called Pisarowa Góra near the village of Krzeczkowo in Mońki Municipality. This brings an older theme of the landscape into focus, distinct from the architecture of the railway station and church.

Despite the extensive destruction of the buildings, traces of their existence remain in the area of the former manors of Waśki, Hornostaje and Krzeczkowo. The manor house in Sikory is among the oldest wooden residential buildings in the Podlaskie Voivodeship. Historical traces in Mońki Municipality include the remains of a manor in Hornostaje and the remnants of a former manor garden in Wojszki. The historical perspective thus ranges from traces of early settlement to the remains of former manors and gardens.

Traditions and a Cycling Route

One specific example of regional tradition is the 29th Voivodeship Competition “Zdobnictwa Obrzędowego Cyklu Wiosennego i Świąt Wielkanocnych” (Ceremonial Decorations for the Spring Cycle and Easter). The 2025 regulations name the Moniecki Ośrodek Kultury in Mońki as the organiser. Competition entries include Easter eggs, palms, floral decorations, straw mobiles and paper cut-outs. Traditional techniques are required for the Easter eggs; the other decorations should reflect local tradition. These different forms bring spring and Easter decorations to life as a craft theme.

Transport routes also provide a sense of direction across the municipality: National Road 65 connects Gołdap with the border crossing in Bobrowniki and passes through Mońki Municipality. Railway line No. 38 also runs through the municipality. A described cycling route runs from Mońki via Sikory, Kalinówka Kościelna and Przytulanka, and back to Mońki.
