Rajgród combines a distinctive hill beside Lake Rajgrodzkie with an early medieval hillfort, historic buildings, and two different routes for active days. Góra Zamkowa, also known as Zamczysko, lies in the western part of the town. Anyone planning a holiday that combines culture and activity will find a variety of starting points for exploring here.

Góra Zamkowa: Hill and hillfort

Góra Zamkowa rises on a peninsula in Lake Rajgrodzkie. Its slopes are steep, and the hill rises up to 15 m above the water level. It is also an early medieval hillfort on a moraine hill. This brings together a striking landscape feature and a historical connection in one place. Today, the hillfort grounds are used as a recreational area. The names Góra Zamkowa and Zamczysko refer to the same site.

Hiking trail and kayaking route with different levels of difficulty

The red PL-2540-c hiking trail in Biebrza National Park starts in Rajgród and is 41.6 km long. Its easy rating and occasionally damp sections describe different aspects of the trail.

The Jegrznia kayaking trail offers a different activity. Its starting point is in Rajgród, where the Jegrznia flows out of Lake Rajgrodzkie; the route is rated difficult. Those choosing between hiking and paddling can weigh up the different demands and trail conditions.

Church and historic townscapes

The Parish Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built from red brick in the Neo-Gothic style between 1906 and 1912. Its furnishings also offer specific details of cultural and historical interest: the side aisles feature stained-glass windows, and the main altar holds a 17th-century painting of Our Lady of Rajgród. Visitors interested in sacred architecture and historic art will find two distinct points of interest in the same church.

Plac 1000-lecia offers another distinctive feature of the townscape: its present-day name recalls the market square, whose triangular shape has been preserved. Several townhouses from the late 19th century and the early years of the 20th century stand there. Also on Warszawska Street is the 19th-century organist’s house of Koniecków and Kurpiewskich. Its covered porch, supported by columns, defines the building. A wooden roadside shrine dating from the mid-19th century also stands on this street. In the Rajgród cemetery, opposite the church, is a brick tomb chapel built in 1826 in the Classical style.

Choosing Rajgród as a holiday destination

You can choose where to stay based on whether you want to focus on historic buildings and the distinctive landscape of Góra Zamkowa, or plan your trip more around an activity. Reasons to choose a holiday apartment or holiday home in Rajgród include the hillfort, the town’s buildings, and the starting points of the routes mentioned above. Hikers can take the length and description of the red trail into account; those planning to paddle should factor the kayaking trail’s difficult rating into their decision.
