Bielsk Podlaski has a documented medieval and early modern history: the city appears in Rus’ chronicles from the mid-13th century, was first mentioned in a political document in 1366, and received Magdeburg rights in 1495.

The documented multi-religious history of Bielsk Podlaski includes Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches, as well as a historic Jewish presence; a synagogue is recorded as early as 1542.
