Krapkowice: Medieval Traces and Oder River Cruises
Accommodation in Krapkowice
A fountain in the middle, old townhouses along a rectangular square and narrow access streets: the Krapkowicki Rynek reflects a typically medieval layout. In Krapkowice, traces like these meet places where the town’s history and the Oder can be explored in different ways.

Market Square, Baszta and Castle History
The Castle of Krapkowice lies close to the Old Town, within the town’s administrative boundaries. This imposing building has a square ground plan and is characterised by the late Renaissance style. Its early history needs a qualification: the castle is thought to have existed as early as the 13th century, before Krapkowice received town rights in 1275 from Władysław, Duke of Opole. The presumed early origins and the specific date of the town rights are two distinct historical reference points.
The Krapkowicka Baszta, the tower of the Upper Gate, dates from the second half of the 14th century and was remodelled around 1580. Today, it houses a tourist information office and exhibition rooms across several floors. A viewing terrace with a telescope is also part of the visit. The tower thus connects a tangible part of the town’s history with visitor facilities in one place.
Further historical traces can be found in the castle ruins in Otmęt. The remains include parts of living quarters, the ruin of the southeastern tower, the perimeter wall and a semicircular bastion at the southwestern corner. The oldest wall remains date from the 16th century. Together with the castle and the Baszta, the ruins show the different ways Krapkowice’s history is visible in the townscape.
Bronze Shoes and Experiences on the Oder
The approximately 6 km-long Obuwniczy Szlak brings stories from past centuries to life in an unusual way: mysterious bronze shoes bear the names Laciek, Mieszczuch, Kopytko, Pepoż, Rogatek, Rolszpila, Tempel and Wyczynówka. QR codes share stories and legends from Krapkowice’s past. The route combines a specific length with an exploration of local tales.
At Port Jachtowy Krapkowice, where the Osobłoga flows into the Oder, you can rent kayaks, pedal boats and boats. Cruises on the Oder are also available, offering views of Krapkowice’s medieval castle. Those who would rather combine the town’s history with an experience on the water will find a different focus here than on a walk around the market square, Baszta and ruins.
Powiat Krapkowicki: Cycling Routes, Nature and Further Excursions
Powiat Krapkowicki lies in the central part of the Opole Voivodeship, along the upper Oder and at the foot of Góra Świętej Anny. The “Doliny Odry” settlement landscape extends across the powiat in the municipalities of Walce, Zdzieszowice, Krapkowice and Gogolin. The Łęg Zdzieszowicki and Żywocickie Łęgi Natura 2000 sites are also part of the powiat. The valleys of the Oder and Osobłoga are well suited to hiking, cycling and birdwatching.
An interactive cycling map of the powiat, with a detailed network of routes, roads and cycle paths, has been created for cyclists. It can be used to choose a route based on the time available, preferred distance and difficulty level. These criteria provide practical guidance for planning a ride without specifying a particular route length or travel time.
Other regional experiences offer a different focus: Jezioro Srebrne in Januszkowice has a bathing lake, fishing spots and accommodation on the water. In the municipality of Krapkowice, in Żużela, children and adults can interact directly with animals under the hosts’ supervision, as well as photograph and feed selected animal species. Mini Zoo Żużela also offers children educational activities with games and entertainment, along with a small playground, a carousel and bouncy castles.
Choose the Focus for Your Holiday Apartment
When looking for a holiday apartment, a simple distinction can help: should your stay focus mainly on Krapkowice’s medieval square, historic buildings and Oder cruises, or would you also like to include cycling, nature and lake activities in the powiat? The regional themes described here relate to Powiat Krapkowicki, not all to the town of Krapkowice. Keeping this distinction in mind when choosing a location can help you focus your search on the experiences you want to shape your stay.
