Church Art and Architectural History

The Minor Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the oldest building in the town. It contains frescoes by Michał Anioł Palloni and the 17th-century painting “Taniec Śmierci” (“Dance of Death”). Between 1706 and 1709, Palloni created nine large wall paintings in the parish church of Węgrów. This brings together a 17th-century painting and later wall paintings—a specific point of interest for anyone interested in sacred art.

The Post-Reformat monastery complex offers a different focus: it consists of a monastery and a church dedicated to Saint Peter of Alcántara and Saint Anthony of Padua. Unlike the name of a single church building, the name here refers to a complex of two buildings. The dedication also indicates the church’s religious orientation and adds to the picture of sacred architecture in Węgrów.

The Dom Gdański adds its own architectural accent. This Baroque building dates from the mid-18th century and stands on the north side of the market square. Its construction date, style and location give you three specific features by which to identify the building. On Rynek Mariacki, next to the town library, stands the Ławka Mistrza Twardowskiego. This bench is a smaller piece of public art in the townscape, setting it apart from the churches and the Baroque house.

Węgrów’s cultural character also includes a bell foundry, one of only two in Poland. It offers another perspective on the town: alongside its churches and works of art, craftsmanship is also a notable part of local life.

Cycling Route, Fishing Spots and Activities by the Water

The recreation area at the reservoir in Węgrów has a 2.3-kilometre cycling route and ten fishing spots, as well as jetties. The reservoir on the Liwiec offers opportunities for recreation, particularly water sports and general sporting activities.
