Ołtarzewski Park: Manor Park and Woodland Character

Ołtarzewski Park was first laid out as a manor park in the 18th century. It covers 15 hectares and has a woodland character. Around 1,150 trees grow there, mostly deciduous; this is an approximate figure and may change over time. The grounds’ history is thus combined with a landscape shaped by trees.

A small-leaved lime tree grows by the main entrance and was recognised as a natural monument because of its considerable size. The park has paved paths with different surfaces, as well as a fitness trail with adjacent areas and exercise equipment, including gymnastic bars and a climbing wall. The paths and exercise area offer different ways to enjoy outdoor activity: alongside exploring the grounds, there are specific opportunities to exercise. The park can therefore be experienced through both its landscape and its recreational facilities.

Events held in the park include the historical pageant “Widowisko Historyczne Bitwa Ołtarzewska,” the “Rajd Rowerowy im Janusza Kusocińskiego” cycling tour, cross-country races, concerts and festivals, including Dni Ożarowa Mazowieckiego. Church and War Cemetery: Historical Perspectives

The Church of Najświętszej Maryi Panny Królowej Apostołów in Ołtarzew also serves as the seminary church of the Pallottine Major Seminary. It was consecrated under this dedication on 2 May 1948. The name refers to Mary as Queen of the Apostles; the church’s role as a seminary church places it within the context of the Pallottine seminary. Its consecration and institutional role thus offer two specific starting points for exploring the church’s cultural history.

The 1939 war cemetery in Ołtarzew provides a different historical perspective. It is laid out in the shape of a cross, with a twelve-metre-high cross at its centre. Buried there are 996 soldiers and officers who fell in the fighting near Ołtarzew and Ożarów on 12 and 13 September 1939. The cross-shaped layout and central cross define the site; the number of those who fell and the two dated days of fighting give the act of remembrance a specific historical context.
