Sochaczewski: Castle, Museums and Cycling Routes

On the right bank of the Bzura, on a hill above the town of Sochaczew, stands the castle of the Masovian dukes. Duke Siemowit III had it built of masonry in the Gothic style around the middle of the 14th century. Museums and Regional History

The Museum of the Sochaczew Region and the Battle of the Bzura presents exhibits in four major permanent exhibitions. The museum also collects material objects documenting material culture, as well as archives connected with the history of Sochaczew and the region. One of the permanent exhibitions is called “Battlefield 1939–1945” and displays weapons, equipment, uniforms and other mementos of the 1939 Polish Campaign.

The Narrow-Gauge Railway Museum has a different focus: it holds the largest collection of narrow-gauge vehicles on the European continent. From April to October, the museum organizes trips along the narrow-gauge line to Kampinos National Park. The “Sochaczew Link” cycling route runs from Żelazowa Wola via Kożuszki to Sochaczew railway station, which is at kilometre 9.9. Another cycling route, the “Memory Trail of the Heroes of the 1939 Battle of the Bzura,” combines active recreation with learning about history. The two routes thus offer different thematic emphases: on the Sochaczew Link, the places named along the route are important, while the trail focuses on combining cycling and history.

The Bzura can also be part of your plans on the water. A kayaking trip can begin at a landing stage in central Sochaczew, next to the castle ruins. Żelazowa Wola is also nearby. It is home to the Museum of the Birthplace of Fryderyk Chopin, which is managed by the Fryderyk Chopin Institute. The village also has a landscape park, designed and laid out by Professor Franciszek Krzywda-Polkowski between 1931 and 1937. The park contains more than 3,000 unique plant species and varieties.
