Przasnysz between city history and the Węgierka
Accommodation in Przasnysz
Przasnysz combines city history with green spaces and activities along the Węgierka. The Neoclassical town hall stands in the middle of the market square, and the monument commemorating the Millennium of the Polish State in Tadeusz Kościuszko City Park recalls the country’s history. The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary parish complex dates from the Late Gothic period. This gives your stay several possible focuses: architecture, religious history and time outdoors.
The town hall and sacred architecture
The town hall is a Neoclassical building in the middle of the market square. It was built in the late 18th century, and its restoration was completed in 2012. The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary parish complex offers an older architectural landmark: a Late Gothic building dating from 1474 to 1485. Saint Stanislaus Kostka was baptised in 1550 in the so-called Kostka Chapel; his parents and brothers are buried in the church. The complex also includes a fully freestanding Gothic masonry bell tower. It dates from the 15th century and was raised around the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries.
Historical landmarks in the wider Przasnysz destination
In the wider Przasnysz destination, the historical perspective reaches back to the granting of town rights in 1427. The churches of the Bernardine and Bernardine Nuns monastery complexes also date from different building phases: the church of the Bernardine Nuns complex was built from 1609 to 1616, while the monastery was completed in 1615. The church of the Bernardine complex was built from 1585 to 1588 at the initiative of Paweł Kostka. These dates and buildings offer different ways to explore the city’s history without collapsing it into a single period.
City park and the Węgierka
The city park was laid out as a promenade garden in the first half of the 19th century. In the wider Przasnysz destination, it also includes an island in the Węgierka. Five oak trees, approximately 300 years old, stand there under conservation protection and are protected as natural monuments. New walking paths made of crushed natural stone have also been laid in Tadeusz Kościuszko City Park. The park’s history and protected trees give time spent in the green space a distinctive historical connection.
Plan your walking and kayaking route
The walking and kayaking route along the Węgierka offers opportunities for walks, running, Nordic walking, cycling and kayaking, and is currently undergoing extensive modernisation. Restrictions affect specific sections: the footpath between the bridge area on ul. Szpitalna and the sports complex is difficult to use because of the condition of the terrain. It is currently not possible to cross the river on foot at ul. Szosa Ciechanowska. Take these conditions into account when planning your route and check the latest information before setting out.
The museum and traces of historic transport
The permanent multimedia exhibition “Złoty wiek Przasnysza” (The Golden Age of Przasnysz) can be viewed at the Historical Museum in Przasnysz. It is aimed mainly at children and offers families a tangible way to explore the city’s history. The Mławska Kolej Dojazdowa narrow-gauge railway is also part of the historical perspective: it was built during the First World War and initially connected Mława with Przasnysz. The railway monument complex in Przasnysz includes a wooden station building dating from around 1925 and a steel bridge over the Węgierka. Both are listed in the register of monuments; this historic connection does not describe present-day train services.
Choose a holiday apartment to suit your travel plans
When looking for a holiday apartment, the mix of activities you have planned may be decisive. First consider whether you want to focus mainly on exploring the architecture and museum, or spend time in the park and along the Węgierka. If the walking and kayaking route is part of your plans, take the modernisation work and the restrictions mentioned above into account.
