Józefów: Nature, Trails and Świdermajer
Accommodation in Józefów
Józefów brings together protected landscapes, two hiking trails of different lengths and distinctive architecture. Anyone considering the town for a holiday will find several themes to guide their travel planning: nature, outdoor activities and a distinctive architectural heritage.
Nature Reserves and Trails
Part of the Mazowiecki Landscape Park lies in Józefów. The town is also home to three nature reserves: Wyspy Świderskie, Wyspy Zawadowskie and Świder. These protected areas give nature lovers several specific place names to consider when planning their trip.
The MZ-5085y hiking trail, “Szlak nad brzegiem Wisły,” is 14.5 kilometres long. Its route through Józefów follows ul. Podstołeczna, runs along the boundary of the Wyspy Zawadowskie Nature Reserve and passes through Wyspy Świderskie. It then follows ul. Górki and ul. Nadwiślańska.
Another option is the 9.5-kilometre MZ-5081z hiking trail. In Józefów, it follows ul. Główna, ul. Dobra and ul. Sikorskiego, passes the railway crossing in Michalin, and continues along ul. Graniczna, ul. Słoneczna, ul. Szeroka, ul. 3 Maja, ul. Kopernika, ul. Wawerska, ul. Ogrodowa, ul. Dworska and ul. Kardynała Stefana Wyszyńskiego as far as the boundary of the Wyspy Świderskie Nature Reserve. The two trails differ in their stated lengths and described routes: one runs, among other places, along the boundary of Wyspy Zawadowskie and through Wyspy Świderskie, while the other goes as far as the boundary of Wyspy Świderskie.
Cycling is another local activity to consider. Józefów has a publicly accessible traffic training facility for pedestrians and cyclists that recreates road infrastructure. It includes paved roads, a cycle path with a practice area, pavements, traffic lights and road signs. This provides a dedicated facility for learning about traffic and cycling, in addition to the hiking trails described above.
Świdermajer and Local History
More than 30 properties in Józefów are listed in the register of the Voivodeship Monuments Conservator. Most are residential buildings from around the turn of the 20th century, built in the Świdermajer style. For travellers interested in architecture, this collection offers a particularly tangible way to explore the town’s history: the named style is found mainly in residential buildings from a clearly defined period.
Two distinctive “winged bus shelters” are located within Józefów’s administrative boundaries. Their shell roofs and suspended signposts are part of their design, along with waiting areas styled like 19th-century railway carriages. They are considered remarkable examples of modernist design from the 1930s. These two shelters add another distinct example of local architectural history to the theme of Świdermajer.
The Muzeum 2 Korpusu Polskiego is devoted to the heritage of General Władysław Anders’s soldiers and the history of Poland’s struggle for freedom and independence. This includes national uprisings, the Second World War and the fate of the Polish Armed Forces in the West. Another historical connection is the former narrow-gauge railway route through Józefów: it runs from the eastern edge of the town, on the boundary with the municipality of Wiązowna, past the railway station to the monument to the Armia Krajowa’s female couriers.
