Pustelnik: Churches, Bells and Village History

The Former Wooden Church

The Church of St Stanislaus and St Catherine was built in 1843 and demolished in 1983 because of its poor structural condition. It was built using log construction, with a boarded facade. Its rectangular floor plan, straight-ended chancel and gabled roof with a roof turret above the transept give a precise picture of its architecture. The church was considered a valuable example of the wooden religious architecture characteristic of the region. Its regional significance can therefore be understood alongside its specific architectural features, even though the building itself no longer survives.

Church Architecture and Visual Art

The Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria was built between 1983 and 2003 to a design by Wiesława Pląska in a contemporary style. While the former wooden church was demolished in 1983, construction of this church began in the same year. The main altar features an image of the Virgin Mary and the Child Jesus, classified as belonging to the Hodegetria type. The image was probably created in the 15th or 16th century in a workshop in Lesser Poland. This brings together, in one building, an image dated to a much earlier period and a construction history spanning the late 20th and early 21st centuries; the dating of the image remains an estimate.

The Parish and Preserved Memorials

The parish in Pustelnik was founded in 1540. Two bells from the former wooden church have been preserved in the parish and are still in use: Stanisław, from 1920, and Józef, from 1928. Their names and dates turn the general reference to the former church into two specific, still-used testimonies to its history.

Historic traces can also be found in the churchyard: the grave of the Arkuszewski family is located there. Pustelnik is also home to a statue of the Virgin Mary from 1919 and a statue of the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus. Together with the bells, these memorials add individual, clearly identifiable details to the history of the church buildings. The dates range from the altar image, probably created in the 15th or 16th century, through the founding of the parish and the bells, to the completion of the church in 2003.

Festivals and Village Traditions

Residents of the village of Pustelnik, in the Stanisławów municipality in Miński County, celebrated the regional Dni Ziemi for the sixth time. Earlier festival programmes combined religious and harvest-related elements: the official celebrations at one edition began with a Mass in the parish church; at another, garden produce was blessed in the square by the Volunteer Fire Brigade. At the sixth edition, a competition for the most beautiful composition made from that year’s harvest was judged on the second day. The competition was a regular part of the celebrations.

Earlier festival programmes also included a kite-flying competition, as well as stalls offering beekeeping products and regional handicrafts. At one edition, guests were served refreshments from the morning onward, prepared by women from the local rural women’s association. These festival days thus brought together religious celebrations, the harvest, local products and fun activities.
