Townscape and architectural history in Świebodzin
The town hall tells several layers of the town’s history. It was probably built in the second half of the 14th century as a two-aisled building. Barrel vaults made of fieldstone have been preserved in the cellar from the early construction phase—an architectural detail that contrasts with the impression created by the market square and streets. An observation terrace at the top of the town hall tower offers views of the town and its surroundings. If you plan to visit, check in advance whether the terrace is open.
The churches also showcase different architectural forms and periods. The Church of St Michael the Archangel was built largely in the second half of the 15th century as a three-aisled hall church with a pentagonal chancel. The Church of NMP Królowej Polski, formerly a Protestant church, was built between 1698 and 1900 in the Neo-Gothic style. Original stained-glass windows have been preserved inside, including one bearing the coat of arms of Świebodzin. Visitors interested in architecture can consider the building form, style and preserved fittings as different aspects of the town’s history.
Three towers, along with sections of the town wall and moat, have survived from the town’s fortifications. The best-preserved sections are on Parkowa, Okrężna and Szpitalna streets. Together with the regular town layout, these remains provide another tangible reference point for the historic character of Świebodzin. Christ the King offers a very different sight: the Art Deco statue is 33 metres high, and its crown measures 3 metres; together with the hill, the monument reaches a total height of 52.5 metres. These figures distinguish the height of the statue from that of the entire monument, hill included.
Lakes and nature in the wider county
Beyond Świebodzin, the Pliszka, Paklica, Obra Leniwa and Ołobok rivers are among the significant waterways in Świebodziński County. Lake Niesłysz, also known as Niesulickie, is the county’s largest lake, with a water surface area of 486.2 hectares and an island area of 10.4 hectares. Lake Trześniowskie, also known as Ciecz, covers 185.7 hectares.
