From former Grabianów to the manor house
Grabanów, formerly called Grabianów, was owned by the Ilinicz and Kiszk families in the 16th century. The settlement was mentioned as early as 1522 as an endowment for St. Anne’s Church in Biała, founded by Jerzy Iwanowicz Ilinicz. This early connection with the church is quite distinct from the manor house and park’s later architectural traces. It gives the local history a time frame that extends beyond the surviving buildings.
In 1714, the manor house was expanded and a pheasantry was established. The two formed a unified Baroque composition. Later buildings include a wooden Czworak (four-family house) from the second half of the 19th century, located near the manor house. West of the manor house are two brick outbuildings from the 1920s and 1930s: a stable and a coach house. This sequence makes comparison possible: the Baroque expansion was followed by a residential building and farm buildings from much later construction phases.
Landscape park and remembrance
The preserved landscape park probably dates from after 1860. Its paths follow axial and radial layouts, although in places they are now only faintly visible. A long driveway once ran along an embankment between ponds. An oval forecourt survives, as does a clearly defined garden area southeast of the manor house, ending in a semicircle and enclosed by rows of hornbeams and ash trees. The park thus brings together different forms of design: path axes, a forecourt and an enclosed garden.
A monument in the park commemorates participants in the Bar Confederation, the Kościuszko, November, January and Warsaw Uprisings, and the Second World War. This memorial site adds another historical perspective to the architectural and garden history. The 32-kilometre-long Klukówka forms a natural boundary between Biała Podlaska and Grabanów.
