Pieńsk combines the history of an industrial town with an unusual urban layout and distinctive glassworks architecture. The town developed from a rural settlement; its structure still brings together elements of this heritage with those of a factory settlement. If you are looking for more than a single excursion destination during your stay, these different aspects give you a concrete impression of the town’s character.

From Rural Settlement to Industrial Town

The hybrid settlement layout is particularly evident in the juxtaposition of different structures: a typical rural pattern runs along Ulica Zgorzelecka, alongside elements of a factory settlement. Pieńsk is an industrial town whose development can be traced through this combination. Urban-style buildings are concentrated mainly in the centre along K. Świerczewskiego, Dworcowa and Kościuszki streets. Pieńsk therefore offers a distinctive way to explore the town’s history: not only individual buildings but also the urban layout tell the story of the different influences that have shaped the town.

The Lucyna glassworks complex, Nysa plant, is particularly illustrative. The plant, which is no longer in operation, is a well-preserved architectural ensemble of significance to the townscape. Its surviving buildings at 44 H. Dąbrowskiego Street are notable for their Neo-Gothic forms and red and yellow facing-brick façades. Most were built between 1900 and 1925. The complex includes more than 30 structures; almost all are protected by their inclusion in the register of monuments. The combination of architectural forms, brick colours and scale makes the former glassworks a distinctive part of the town’s history.

The ŁUŻYCE glass factory is also part of Pieńsk’s industrial history. It was founded in 1872 to produce optical, pressed and bottle glass. Together with the Lucyna glassworks complex, Nysa plant, it illustrates the importance of different types of glass production to the town, without implying that the two facilities should be treated as a single plant.

The Church and Getting Your Bearings in the Centre

The Roman Catholic parish church of Saint Francis of Assisi is an example of Neo-Romanesque architecture. It is located in the centre of Pieńsk, with its façade facing K. Świerczewskiego Street. The church can therefore be appreciated as a distinctive architectural feature alongside the town’s industrial history. Those interested in architectural styles will find both Neo-Romanesque church architecture and the Neo-Gothic forms of the glassworks complex in Pieńsk.

By Bike and on Foot

If you would like to include a cycling trip in your stay, the green cycling route starts in Pieńsk and is about 19 km long.

A footbridge and cycle bridge over the Lusatian Neisse connects Pieńsk with the neighbouring municipality of Neisseaue and its twin town, Rothenburg. It thus provides a pedestrian and cycling link to both places.

Traditions and Choosing Where to Stay

The annual cross-border event “Szczodry Wieczór” takes place at the Dom Kultury. Polish, German and Czech participants exchange Christmas traditions and celebrate together. For families or groups with different interests, this is another aspect to consider when choosing when to travel and the kind of stay you are looking for.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Pieńsk, you can start by asking yourself what you would most like your stay to centre on: the glassworks architecture, the history of the industrial town, a cycling trip or the exchange of Christmas traditions. Pieńsk brings these themes together within a clearly recognisable urban layout. This lets you choose the town according to your own interests, rather than limiting your trip to a single sight.
