Masłów is also home to the ruins of a former mausoleum made of bog iron. This material sets the historic site apart from the other historical remains.

Trees also form part of the natural heritage: trees within the Masłów area are listed as natural monuments. These include a horse chestnut and a black poplar. The two species offer a specific reason during your stay to look beyond buildings and archaeological traces and take notice of the village’s remarkable trees as well.

Church and Traces of the Past

Among the historic buildings is the 17th-century branch church of Matki Bożej Nieustającej Pomocy, which is listed in the register of monuments. Sandstone epitaphs in Masłów also commemorate members of the founder’s family, the owners of Masłów and local nobility. They date from 1585 to 1652. These different connections show that the surviving historical evidence concerns not only individual buildings but also the people and families associated with Masłów.

The settlement traces date back to the time of the Lusatian culture. Another historical trace lies at Töppelberg near Masłów: rich urn finds were made at the cremation burial ground. These clay vessels attracted scholarly interest in the 16th century. The surviving evidence thus spans the history of the place, from early settlement traces to later interest in archaeological finds.

The surroundings of Masłów were also comprehensively described at an early date. “Maslographia,” published in 1711, focused on the area around the village. Together with the traces of the Lusatian culture, the urn finds and the historic buildings, it offers several ways to explore Masłów through its past.
