Village History and Castle Architecture

Karpniki dates back to the 14th century. By 1305, a village paying rent had been established here in the Duchy of Jawor, closely linked to Sokolec Castle. The later building history of Karpniki Castle is a separate matter: its modernization began in 1844 and resulted in a three-storey neo-Gothic castle. A moat surrounds the grounds, and a stone arched bridge leads to the castle. The early connection with Sokolec Castle and the later modernization of Karpniki Castle are two distinct chapters in the village’s history.

St. Jadwiga’s Church: History and Furnishings

The small, single-nave Church of St. Jadwiga is a Gothic-Renaissance building with richly detailed furnishings. It was first mentioned in 1399; in the second half of the 16th century, it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style, incorporating older Gothic sections of masonry. This building history offers a concrete point of interest for conversations with children: older structural elements and a later reconstruction come together in the church.

The furnishings include a polychrome wooden Renaissance altar, a 17th-century pulpit and an 18th-century Rococo side altar. There is also a collection of Baroque paintings and a figural epitaph for Friedrich von Kanitz, who died in 1582. Landscape Park and Fishponds

Work on the landscape park in Karpniki began in 1822 under the direction of the gardener Walter from Bukowiec, with the personal support of Princess Marianna and Peter Josef Lenné. The park grounds include walking terraces and paths. Alongside the history of the buildings, the focus is therefore also on a deliberately designed landscape.

A complex of fishponds lies in the lower part of Karpniki. Mature trees—oaks, limes and hornbeams—have been preserved around the ponds. The park grounds and the pond area offer different landscape features: terraces and paths in one place, expanses of water and established trees in the other.

Hiking Destinations Nearby

At 654 metres, Krzyżna Góra is the highest mountain in the Góry Sokole. Metal railings secure its rocky summit, which offers views of Karpniki, the Rudawy Janowickie, the Karkonosze and Jelenia Góra. The mountain is therefore a different landmark from the fishponds in the lower part of the village: from its summit, the view extends across several named landscapes and places.

Separately, a yellow hiking trail leads from Karpniki to the Szwajcarka mountain hut. This gives you two distinct points of reference when planning: the viewpoint at Krzyżna Góra and the hut as the destination of a named hiking trail. You can weigh the places and routes mentioned according to whether you are more interested in a view or a hike with a specific destination.
