Churches, Art and Music in Jawor
The Church of Peace in Jawor was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001. Another historical trace leads to the Church of St Martin, which houses a 14th-century sculpture of St Martin in episcopal robes. Bolków Castle was built around the middle of the 13th century and expanded towards its end by Duke Bolko I. Its 25-metre-high tower offers wide-ranging views over the Nysa Szalona valley. The castle also hosts a demonstration in the blacksmith’s workshop as part of the “Living History Lessons”: a heated piece of metal is forged into a practical object. The combination of architectural history and craftsmanship makes Bolków a distinct destination for travellers interested in culture.
The ruins of 14th-century Świny Castle offer another historical setting. Fragments of vaults, stucco and dressed-stone portals have survived, as well as Gothic windows and exterior sgraffito decorations. In the municipality of Bolków, the “Szlak 4 Zamków,” designated as a tourist route, connects medieval fortifications. It passes through forests, ravines and valleys, and along streams; wild mouflons and salamanders may be found in this landscape.
Hiking Trails and Landscapes
Those who want to focus more on nature and outdoor activities can consider a range of hiking trails. The approximately 12-kilometre “Turystyczna” trail runs through the municipality of Paszowice, in the heart of Kraina Wygasłych Wulkanów. The “Widokowa” trail passes through Myślibórz, Jakuszowa, Siedmica, Grobla, Kłonice and Paszowice. It also runs through Kraina Wygasłych Wulkanów and offers numerous viewpoints and nature experiences.
In the municipality of Paszowice, “Leśna Przygoda” runs through the picturesque landscapes of the Kaczawskie Mountains and their foothills. The “Szlak Salamandry” passes through Jakuszowa and Myślibórz and over Rataj Hill. For a different kind of nature experience, the “Ptasi Trakt” educational trail is in Pogwizdów and loops around a pond. The 68-hectare “Wąwóz Siedmicki” nature reserve lies in Jakuszowa and Nowa Wieś, in the municipality of Paszowice and in the southern part of “Chełmy” Landscape Park.
Cycling and Road Travel
Bolków also offers two different cycling routes. The blue route runs for about 5.5 kilometres along the Nysa Szalona River, then passes through Sady Dolne, Sady Górne, Figlów, Nagórnik and Półwsie before returning to Bolków. The yellow route returns via Wierzchosławice, Wierzchosławiczki, Stare Rochowice, Płonina and Pastewnik; much of it passes through spruce forests. For orientation in the area: the S3 road runs for 16.1 kilometres through the municipality of Paszowice and has two junctions there.
