Wadowice: City History and Experiences

Wadowice combines city history with pilgrimage routes and active experiences on land and water. The city lies in the western part of the Wieliczka Foothills, in a basin between the foothills and the mountain ranges of the Beskid Mały. The Skawa Valley also shapes its setting; the city centre lies between the Skawa and Choczenka rivers. Museums and Trails Through the City’s History

At the Family Home of Pope John Paul II, the museum presents a permanent exhibition and also welcomes visitors for individual visits. The Marcin Wadowita City Museum focuses on historical collections from the Wadowice area as well as temporary exhibitions, many of which are connected with Karol Wojtyła. The Zone of Discovery, Imagination and Activity SOWA, located in Wadowice’s historic railway station, offers a different way to explore the city. It is accessible to people with reduced mobility.

Two themed trails focus on different aspects of history. The Karol Wojtyła Trail is about 4.5 km long and leads to 14 sites connected with the childhood and youth of Saint John Paul II. The Galicyjskie Wadowice Trail, about 5 km long, has 13 sites relating to the city’s history during the partitions of Poland. You can choose between a biographical theme and the city’s political history.

Longer pilgrimage routes also explore the region. The Romea Strata runs for 20 km through Wadowice Municipality, passing through Jaroszowice, Wadowice, Chocznia, Zawadka and Ponikiew. The Beskidzka Droga św. Jakuba includes a 53 km section from Myślenice via Sułkowice, Lanckorona and Kalwaria Zebrzydowska to Wadowice. These routes complement the shorter themed trails with a different, pilgrimage-focused perspective.

Cycling and Kayaking

About 55 km of tourist cycling routes run through the municipality. For mountain-bike singletrack, Wadowice Trails is located in the forested area of Jaroszowicka Góra: the complex is designed for beginners, families with children and experienced mountain bikers. The pump track in Wadowice has loops for beginners and advanced riders, adapted to different difficulty levels. It is free to use; check the applicable rules before your visit.

The Wadowice–Grodzisko kayaking route is 14 km long, divided into three stages, and has an estimated paddling time of about 3.5 hours. You can watch waterbirds along the way. The Skawa flows through the Dolina Dolnej Skawy Natura 2000 site. Numerous rapids, rocks protruding from the water and meanders shape the river; due to these conditions, the Skawa is recommended for experienced kayakers. This makes the trip quite different from the designated offerings for a range of experience levels at the singletrack trails and pump track.
