Culture and City History on Foot

The city walking route starts at the town hall in Nowy Sącz’s market square. Along the way, it passes the Basilica of St Margaret and follows the remains of the city walls. If you are interested in buildings and the city’s historic character, you can connect these sights on a circular walk. The route also offers a different perspective from a museum visit: here, the focus is on the buildings and traces in the urban landscape.

The Gothic House is now home to the Regional Museum in Nowy Sącz. Its present-day purpose brings the historic building together with a cultural attraction. When planning your trip, you can make a visit to this museum a cultural highlight in its own right and complement it with a walk through the city. Your choice of focus depends on whether you would rather explore exhibitions, architecture or routes through the urban landscape.

Folk Culture, Architecture and Crafts

The Sądecki Ethnographic Park focuses on wooden architecture and the traditional folk culture of the local Lach, Pogórzans and Sądecki Górale ethnographic groups, as well as the Lemko, German and Roma ethnic groups. Its subject matter therefore extends beyond a single tradition. Demonstrations of traditional rural crafts, workshops in regional handicrafts and presentations of regional cuisine are held there regularly and occasionally. These different formats offer a range of cultural highlights for your plans: architecture and inherited culture are represented alongside crafts and food.

Galician Town complements these themes with a reconstruction of a small-town architectural ensemble. It includes a small market square and a row of about a dozen houses. Galician Town also has a photography studio, a watchmaker’s workshop and a pottery workshop. If you are especially interested in historic crafts and small-town architecture, you will find a different focus here than at the Ethnographic Park: the reconstructed ensemble and the workshops define the place.

Special Walks and Nature

The Nowy Sącz Ice Cream Trail is a walk that lets you explore the city while sampling its ice cream specialities. Another city walk follows the Nowy Sącz graffiti and street art trail. Each offers its own distinctive focus: one combines exploring the city with ice cream, while the other follows graffiti and street art. If you are planning a trip around several interests, you can choose one of these special walks in addition to museums and traditional themes.

The Ecumenical Pilgrim Route offers a different perspective. In Nowy Sącz, it passes through places that are important to Poles, Jews, Roma, Germans and Lemkos. The natural beaver habitat, by contrast, is in a forest in the Dąbrówka district. At different times of year, the beaver habitat makes an appealing subject for photographs. A route connected with different communities and a nature spot within the city are therefore available as distinct themes.
