Rząska between Railways, Protected Landscapes and Manor House History

Rząska borders Kraków and offers visitors several points of interest: rail connections, protected landscapes and a layered local history. There is also a research and education centre specialising in horse breeding. Arriving by train and planning your onward journey

The Zabierzów Rząska passenger stop is in Rząska on railway line No. 133 between Dąbrowa Górnicza Ząbkowice and Kraków Główny. It is served by SKA3 line trains. Listed destinations include Zabierzów, Krzeszowice and Oświęcim, as well as Kraków Główny and onward travel to Tarnów. This allows you to factor rail travel into your plans. Protected area and landscape

In the northeast of Rząska, undeveloped, partly wooded areas lie on the slopes of Pasternik. The “Uroczysko w Rząsce” ecological protected area has a different character: it preserves remnants of an alder-ash riparian forest, as well as reed communities that developed around former ponds, disused meadows and pastures. The protection objectives also include the marsh violet, which is classified as endangered in the Polish Red Data Book of Plants. Thus, open and partly wooded hillside areas contrast with a landscape whose distinctive features are linked to wetlands and their plant life. Part of the protected area lies within the cadastral district of Rząska, in the Zabierzów administrative unit.

“Uroczysko w Rząsce” and “Podgołogórze” together cover 65.10 hectares. Access is exclusively from Kraków-Bronowice, via Tetmajera Street and nearby entrances. The small Podgołogórze depression east of Rząska cannot be accessed from the village side. If you plan to visit these areas, check local access conditions in advance and plan to use the described route from Kraków-Bronowice.

Church, chapels and manor house history

The parish church of St Anthony of Padua was built between 1981 and 1984 on the site of a former chapel. The chapel commemorated the great village fire of 20 June 1887. In the historic centre, there is also a masonry wayside shrine at a crossroads, dating from the early 20th century. The two sites reflect different periods: the church’s history is connected to the memory of the fire, while the wayside shrine is a distinct architectural landmark in the village centre.

The new manor house dates from around 1886 and is now a convent of the Albertine Sisters. Extensive alterations were carried out in 1950 and 1995. Another connection to the manor house dates back to the 18th century: the manor house of that period was demolished after 1947. A pair of carved lions from the former estate stands at the entrance to the present-day building on its grounds. Conservation, restoration and construction work was also carried out on a chapel in Rząska containing a statue of the Virgin Mary, and was completed in 2023.

Horses as a distinct focus

The Research and Education Centre of the Faculty of Animal Sciences and Biology at the University of Agriculture focuses primarily on horse breeding. It includes a museum exhibition and also operates a riding centre open to the public. Hippotherapy and carriage rides are offered there. The focus on horses is distinct from the village’s landscape and architectural history.
