St Luke’s Church and its art treasures
St Luke’s Church is a wooden building dedicated to the Apostle Luke and is now an Orthodox church; originally, it was Greek Catholic. It was probably built in 1868 or earlier. The cautious dating is part of the picture of this historic building: the year given is not a confirmed construction date.
The church’s ceilings and walls are covered with polychrome decoration created by Jan Jakubowski-Sasów in 1904. The term refers to multicoloured decoration; here, it covers both interior surfaces. The walls also feature elements of a Baroque iconostasis dating from 1796 and icons from the 17th century. These include an icon of St Nicholas from after 1660. The dates reveal different periods within the same church interior: the iconostasis, older icons and the polychrome decoration created in 1904 do not all date from the same moment.
A village cemetery lies on the slope above St Luke’s Church, with gravestones dating from the early 20th century. Its location and historic gravestones add another aspect of local history to the sacred architecture.
Village history through two biographies
Maksym Hładyk founded a school in Kunkowa and developed its cultural life by establishing a theatre, a choir and a reading room. These different institutions represented learning, theatre, singing together and reading. Orest Hładyk was also associated with Kunkowa: he served as village head for 32 years and was also active as a translator and in public life. The two biographies offer different ways into the village’s history—through cultural initiatives and through long-standing involvement in public life.
