Zagórze on the western edge of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland
Accommodation in Zagórze
Zagórze lies on the western edge of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland. The old beeches of Bukowica, an outcrop of Triassic limestone several metres long and the “Małe Gaje” loess gorge give the area its distinctive natural features. There are also hiking and pilgrimage routes, historic chapels and Grodzisko Duże. If you are looking for a holiday apartment for a trip focused on nature, outdoor activities or culture, these themes can help you decide what you would like to focus on.
Beech forest, limestone and loess
Part of the village district (sołectwo) of Zagórze lies within Tenczyński Landscape Park. The Bukowica Nature Reserve is located within the protected part of the Zagórze village district. Its Carpathian beech forest, with its old beeches, defines the reserve’s natural character. Another feature is the several-metre-long rock outcrop of Triassic limestone, a geological rarity in Bukowica. “Małe Gaje” reveals a different aspect of the landscape: the loess gorge lies on the slopes of the Garb Tęczyński in the northern part of Zagórze. Forest, limestone and loess give the area a variety of natural features. If you like choosing destinations based on their landscapes, you can take these differences into account when looking for a suitable holiday apartment.
Hiking trail, circular route and pilgrimage route
The routes also offer different points of interest. The yellow Jura Valleys Hiking Trail passes through Zagórze and the Bukowica Nature Reserve. The blue cycling route in the Babice area also passes through Zagórze. The “Szlak Miejsc Papieskich na Ziemi Chrzanowskiej” (Trail of Papal Sites in the Chrzanów Region) runs through the area as well; as a pilgrimage and memorial route, it focuses on religious history. This gives you a way to distinguish between different interests when planning your trip: the yellow route is specifically a hiking trail and passes through Bukowica, the blue circular route offers another route to explore, and the papal sites trail focuses on religious heritage. You can consider which theme you would like to shape your days in Zagórze.
Chapels and earlier history
The historic Chapel of Our Lady of the Nursing Breast dates from the early 19th century and is listed in the municipal register of monuments. Numerous religious ceremonies were held there, including some attended by Cardinal Karol Wojtyła. Another chapel in Zagórze-Góry commemorates his visit to Zagórze. The two sites offer different points of reference: one is associated with religious ceremonies, the other with the memory of his visit. Grodzisko Duże adds another layer of history. It dates from the 7th to the 11th century and contains surviving fragments of a fortification. These traces reach much further back in time than the chapel from the early 19th century.
Choose the focus for your trip
Zagórze also has a fishing spot. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can start with your interests: nature and geology, routes, religious history or fishing all offer different starting points for planning. If you want to combine several themes, the landscape features, routes and historic sites provide a concrete guide to the kind of stay you are looking for.
